Wanda Kunzi

August 27, 1948 ~
September 12, 2025

Wanda Kay Kunzi, age 77, of Grandville, went home to be with her Lord on Friday, September 12, 2025.

Wanda grew up in Michigan but was teaching in California when God called her to work in Asia, where she spent most of her adult life. She loved Asia and even after coming back to Michigan she longed for the authentic Asian food and the big cool mountains.

She had a passion to see God's people involved in praying for the nations. She continued her work after returning to the states by creating interactive kids crafts to introduce kids to the different Asian countries and was actively involved with Zoom prayer groups across the world.

Wanda was gifted with hospitality in that she was always welcoming many guests to her home. She was always ready to show the love of Jesus.

In her will, she included the following verses: "Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be." (Psalm 139:16) and "Then I heard a voice from heaven say, 'Write: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on,' 'Yes,' says the Spirit, 'they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.' " (Revelation 14:13) She explained: "What this means to me is that through the work of Jesus Christ the covenant curse of death has been turned into my hope of an eternal reward. As a Christian, I need not fear death nor take extraordinary measures to needlessly prolong it."

Wanda was preceded in death by her father, Eugene Kunzi; mother, Esther Kunzi; and brother-in-law, John Balkon. She will be lovingly remembered by her sister, Gail Balkon; her nephew and nieces, Eric and Kathryn Balkon, and Melissa Balkon; and her grandnieces, Kenzie and Rylee Balkon.

A celebration of life open house will be held on Saturday, September 27, from 1-3 p.m. at Calvary Christian Reformed Church, 3500 Byron Center Ave. SW, Wyoming MI 49519. A private family graveside service will be held. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to OMF International.

Oh Dear Wanda, I miss you. We met when we both taught in Alameda,California. I remember our journey as teachers talking after school about teaching and our students. You had, my son,Steven in your 4th grade class. You gave him a love of reading. I remember when you told me that you were going to teach in China. That was a brave move but I was devastated to have my friend so far away. Your letters to me and our phone calls assured me that you had found your calling. We were friends for 47 years. Your life was a blessing to many. I will remember you always. Love, Jean

I taught English at Peking University (Beida) with Wanda and other teammates for three years from 1983-86. What a wonderful experience we all had! Not many Americans lived in Beijing at that time and bicycles and buses ruled the roads; private car ownership was extremely rare. Wanda was an incredible teacher and dearly loved by her students. She was always a joy to be around. Most of all I always admired her strong faith. We kept in contact over the years and prayed for our respective ministries. I really appreciated her friendship. Wanda will be sorely missed. - Mike Brzezinski

We had the high privilege of being in an OMF prayer group with Wanda for several years, where we prayed together and enjoyed fellowship with her. We learned so much from her experiences and witnessed her Christlike presence. She was always cheerful and encouraging, even through the trials she endured, an overflow from her strong reliance on and intimacy with Jesus. She lived for her Savior and to help see others saved. The greatest evidence of her heart for God and people was the way she prayed! It seemed as though she was not just praying, but was aware she was in the presence of her God, and her Friend. Now she is actually with Jesus, and we are confident she is feeling that promised “joy unspeakable”, far beyond what any of us can even imagine! We miss you, Wanda, and rejoice with you! - Tom and Ruth Shillair

Wanda, our dear friend who devoted so many years of her life to sharing God’s love and salvation with the Chinese people—my people—is now resting in Heaven. I feel so blessed to have her in my life for over three decades as our friendship began in the summer of 1991 in Beijing. Wanda was always loving, encouraging, and full of optimism. Even during these last few years as she battled cancer, she never lost her hope or her joy. Whenever we spoke on the phone or exchanged messages, she never complained; instead, she always asked about me and my life. Just two days before the Lord welcomed her home, she was still sending brief, uplifting texts. When I once asked about her treatment, she simply said, “Well, If God wants me to stay here a little longer, that’s good and I’m grateful. But it’s even better if He takes me home.” I will forever treasure our time together—in Beijing, California, Michigan, and the Carolinas. Wanda, I will never forget your steadfast love and trust in Jesus Christ, your cheerful spirit, your encouraging words, and your infectious laughter. I will miss you dearly and look forward to the day we are reunited in Heaven with our loved ones.

Lament to God about Wanda’s Heavenly Home. 1 Corinthians 15:55 “O Death, Where is thy sting!” Life is combination and conglomeration of joy and sorrow. Why did you want only gladness and good things? Only God’s love saves us through Christ’s death. His death on the cross and Wanda’s death on cancer assured me that His purpose, plan and promise is fulfilled in her life, “I will never leave nor forsake her.” Please lament with me as I face the next transition of life to be transformed of Christ’s image as I saw it in Wanda’s life. In addition, I did not see any regret, remorse or reprimand she had against God as she battled with two cancers- kidney in 2014 and ovarian cancer with colonic metastasis after retirement in 2017. She also underwent right hip replacement for long neglected right hip osteoporosis. During all her illnesses, she was strong, independent and willing to be treated. She was great partner in crime for His name's sake as she taught English in 1980 in Beijing and later on she moved to the Nosu Yi people in Autonomous Nosu Yi Daliangshan Prefecture in Zhaojue County for Out of School Youth Center, then we served together in Meigu County for Community Development through Village Family Health Training. Her passion was mostly in teaching and caring for children as teacher so that the kids enjoyed our summer camp programs in cool to cold mountains. She obeyed God in proclaiming salvation during Christmas season when Christ was born. She did all things for all Chinese people as the Holy Spirit led her so that by all means, they will be saved.

Wanda and I met my first year in Asia, 1986, and from that time on, the countless memories and decades of friendship began. We shared many a meal in alleyway dumpling or noodle restaurants in Beijing, outings with her students so that they could have another person with whom to speak English, winter traveling to Yellow Mountain, Bible studies with other international friends, tromping through outdoor markets, Stateside meeting Wanda's parents and being out in the boat for skiing... I think I visited every home but one where Wanda lived in Asia, sharing through the years the joys and challenges, funny moments and serious ones, too. A friend asked me just two days ago, "Tell me about Wanda." I didn't know where to begin. Steadfastness in faith, perseverance in suffering, big laughter and infectious positivity, lack of entitlement, a willingness to walk alongside people in need.... these and so many other words come to mind, attached to conversations, memories, deep diving into problems both personal and global. Thank you, my friend, for teaching me that Jesus is always near and for the many times in the last several years that despite heavy subjects and personal pain, there was always the joy of laughter to be found. "Up for a chat?" text would ping on my phone, usually later in the evening, and I knew it would be a good ending to the day. With love and prayers for Wanda's family, and with deep gratitude for her life, Julie

We have such wonderful memories of Wanda through all these years beginning when we met in Beijing in 1987! We traveled by train to Inner Mongolia and stayed in a yurt. …met at Heaven Lake in Xinjiang. …spent many days together in Beijing. …visited her at language school in Kunming. … saw her home in the big cool mountains of Sichuan. …hosted her at our home in Xiamen ….traveled in Guizhou together ….water skied at her parents’ lakeside home in Michigan …spent time together in the Carolinas ….welcomed her many times at our home in Pennsylvania and enjoyed her cooking at many of her homes in Michigan and throughout the world Most of all, we will always remember her sermons. What???? This may be the only tribute where someone remembers Wanda as a great preacher! Wanda’s sermons didn’t have words; they were lived out in her heart and actions. Some of the sermon titles??? How to trust God when future plans fail. How to have joy even when doctors’ reports could crush anyone else. How to refrain from judging others. How to love friends and family when you’re an ocean away. How to never give up on loving people. How to be faithful in small and great matters. We seldom remember even good sermons when they’re preached with words. We will never forget Wanda’s messages in the beautiful way she lived. With tears and love, Brenda and Jere

Have known Wanda ever since I set foot in China in Feb 1999. We were comrades together in the big cool mountains for many years . She loved Christ and for this reason spent most of her adult life in China teaching English and later served among the Nosu people whom she loved deeply and dearly. Wanda once said , “ I didn’t get to see my grand niece and nephew grow up. “ Service is not without sacrifices of which Wanda only know too well. Wanda is someone who could have a great conversation with you sitting on a dirt floor eating a bowl of noodles or having coffee in a cafe . She’s incredibly creative , courageous and a champion for empowering women & children. So many of us who have worked alongside her have been so blessed by her life and will really miss her . Dear sister , see you on the other side . - Mei Yan

I am grieving over my respected teacher Wanda’s passing away.A lot of precious memories flash through my mind as they were happening today when Wanda taught us from 1991 to 1993. Her class “American society and culture” once a week was definitely full attendance as everyone was hooked by her elegance, her magnetic voice, her passion, her unique teaching style and her dedication . I was so lucky to have her as my dissertation advisor. She led me through a very interesting writing process. Her guidance to my thesis had a great impact on my career and lifelong learning. From her we learned how to write in English as well as how to be a good teacher. She is resting in peace. My dear teacher and role model, you will always be remembered. From Boston-Weihong Guo

Wanda was my teacher when I studied in Beijing, China from 1989 to 1991. Though time has faded the details of her words and lessons, I will never forget her beautiful smile, gracious manner, and elegant sense of style — all of which I deeply admired. Reading her story now, I realize that Wanda was truly God-sent to China, to us. What she contributed was something I could never have done myself — it could only be accomplished by someone with such a great heart. She has now answered God’s final call and is with Him again, but she will always be remembered with gratitude and love. RIP

Wanda was a wonderful person – creative, energetic, and fun to be with. She loved Jesus and had served God tirelessly in many parts of China, using her gifts to share God’s love with people of all ages. Although I did not serve in the same field as her, I had the privilege of visiting her at her home in China, and most recently, in Michigan. Wanda was always hospitable, making me feel welcome and at home. I felt that I could share my thoughts with Wanda, and I enjoyed praying with her. Indeed, Wanda was a good example for us as she had always encouraged God’s servants and prayed for them regularly. Wanda will be sorely missed. But I am glad she can finally rest from her labor and enjoy the presence of Jesus Christ – her Savior and Lord whom she had loved all her life. – Daphne Ong

In Memory of Teacher Wanda The news of Teacher Wanda's passing struck me like a sudden blow, my heart instantly filled with sorrow and reluctance. Those fragmented moments spent with her now played clearly in my mind like an old film, each scene infused with her unique warmth. I still vividly remember my time studying at Beijing Foreign Studies University, where Teacher Wanda was our guide in the course American Culture and Overview. She was never a rigid lecturer who merely repeated textbooks—with her profound knowledge, she always managed to break down obscure cultural theories into vivid and engaging narratives, allowing us to easily grasp the clashes between different civilizations. With her broad perspective, she often shared overseas experiences beyond the textbook, opening new windows for us to see the world. Though rigorous in teaching, she never put on airs with students; she always listened patiently to our thoughts. In her classes, we gained not only knowledge but also the confidence to think independently—a lasting influence that remains with me to this day. Outside the classroom, she was more like an unreserved "elder sister." Once, she specially prepared all the ingredients and invited us to her place to make dumplings. When she couldn't find suitable containers for the filling after searching the house, she simply turned around and brought two washbasins from the bathroom. We froze for two seconds, then burst into understanding laughter—this unassuming affability made the warmth of our time together all the more genuine. She always participated enthusiastically in various student activities. On Easter, she boiled a whole basin of eggs in advance and painted them one by one with colorful patterns, then distributed them to each of us during the event. Holding the warm, painted eggs and looking at her smiling face, the campus seemed to be filled with the festive atmosphere of fireworks. The joy and warmth of that moment still warms my heart when I think back on it. I also shared a particularly unforgettable personal connection with her. When a classmate invited her to their wedding, I took the opportunity to ask her to stay at my home. At that time, my living conditions were quite modest, but she didn't mind at all; instead, she was cheerful every day and stayed for about a week. During that period, we took my children to the park for walks and cooked together at home. She always held a camera, capturing every one of those ordinary yet heartwarming moments. Unfortunately, I am now far abroad, and those memory-laden photos are inaccessible to me— a small, lingering regret in my heart. Teacher Wanda was like a gentle beam of light, illuminating our path of knowledge with her learning and warming our youthful years with her sincerity. Though she has left us, those bits and pieces of our time together, and the warmth she imparted, will forever be tucked away in our memories, becoming an indelible treasure in our hearts.

Wanda was our own Mother Teresa in China. She was gentle, humble, and always giving her whole heart to love and serve others. She went to the most remote places with a smile, bringing hope to children, care to the elderly, and comfort to everyone around her. We will forever remember you, dear Wanda! RIP. Love

Forever Cherishing the Memory of My Most Respected Teacher I first met Wanda Kunzi in 1991 at Beijing Foreign Studies University, where she taught American Society and Culture. Her lively, engaging teaching style — full of humor, wit, and expressive gestures — was like a fresh spring breaking through the rigid and monotonous teaching methods common in China at the time. She awakened our curiosity and ignited our passion for learning. Wanda was more than a teacher; she was a bridge between two cultures. As an ambassador of cultural exchange between China and the United States, she made outstanding contributions to the friendship between our nations. She came to China with the love of God in her heart. With her brightest smile and gentlest spirit, she worked tirelessly. Through her humility, compassion, and deep faith, she touched countless lives for the Kingdom of God. It was through Wanda that I first learned there is a God. From her I first heard the name “Jesus Christ.” She was the one who planted the seed of the Gospel in my heart. In 2009, my family traveled to Meigu County in the Daliang Mountains of Sichuan Province to visit her. This remote region, with poor transportation and underdeveloped economy, presented many challenges. Yet we saw Wanda walking tirelessly from one Yi village to another, pouring herself into children’s education, youth employment, elderly health care, and improving community facilities. Her love for the people was vast and unconditional. She carried God’s mission in her heart and longed for the Good News of salvation to take root in this land through her life and testimony. That visit left a deep mark on us. We were profoundly moved by her love in action, and not long afterward, our entire family became followers of Christ. Knowing Wanda has been one of God’s greatest blessings in my life. She cared for me like a family member — guiding me, encouraging me, and holding my hand tightly so that I, a believer who often stumbled, would not fall behind. Through her life’s testimony, she showed me the true purpose of living: To be a messenger of God’s love to others. Her life was a living sermon, and I will carry her influence in my heart forever. "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." (2 Timothy 4:7)

I first met Wanda in 2003 in Chengdu, China. She loved the Yi people and prayed patiently for God to open door to get to Mei Gu, where she served till her retirement. She was a dear sister in Christ and a previous prayer partner. We will miss her!

I am so shocked to hear Wanda going to the Lord! But I am so blessed to be a student of Wanda from 1992-1994 in BFSU. She taught us American Culture. She was very warm-hearted and invited students to her apartment for Christmas celebration. Of course she did not mention anyting about her faith. But we were impressed by the special festival celebration. Wanda would be very pleased to know that I now am a Christian. Thakn you Wanda. It is a great pity that we did not keep in touch since my graduation. If I had known that you were in America when I visited Grand Rapdis in 2017, I would surely have tried to visit you. Thank you so much for what you did for China because you loved the Lord so you loved His children. Rest in peace, dear teacher, dear sister. We will meet in Heaven joyful before our Lord! Wanda is indeed God's good and faithful servant. She was the first director of the Sichuan Zhaojue county 1st of its kind youth center. She went on to envision and encourage the small team then to go on to a very tough and dark area among the minority tribe. Together with 3 other single ladies, Wanda was a fearless pioneer in remote mountainous areas of Sichuan. She left a legacy of hope in the darkness, patience in suffering and joyfulness amidst challenging and seemingly impossible circumstances. Her life demonstrate the Message alive and speaking

We prayed for Wanda for perhaps two decades as one of the OMF missionaries in our OMF group in E Lansing. When she returned to the US permanently it was a joy to meet up with her at twice yearly gathering in Lake Odessa. When covid began we began to meet by zoom as a group and she was usually able to attend the monthly meetings, so we got to kniw her even better. She was impressive in her heart for prayer and the in depth quality of her prayers. She had a gentle and quiet spirit the Lord loves and a care for others that touched my our hearts! I am sure she is resting in peace!
