Ruggles B. Harrington

Ruggles B. Harrington, age 90, of Wyoming, was called to his heavenly home on Friday, April 27, 2018. He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Chris Harrington and sister, Barb Riley.  He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Nancy; children, Michael and Susan Harrington, Tamara Harrington; grandchildren, Kelli and Michael Sabowski, Gregory Harrington and his fiancee Avery Nied, Ashley and Joseph Pattison; great grandson, Cayden Pattison; sister and brother-in-law, Sally and Chuck Dear; brother, Ron Rice; many nieces, nephews and cousins.  Rug was dedicated to the City of Wyoming and served 12 years on the City Council.  He would not move to another house or condo because he would have to leave his beloved city.  He was Mayor Pro Tem and greeted and escorted former President Jimmy Carter while in office.  Rug loved family above all else and never missed one of the kid’s sporting events or family celebrations.  He was an avid fisherman and instilled that same love in his son.  Rug was a member of the Pere Marquette Watershed Council, Trout Unlimited, and the Grand Rapids Steelheaders.  He was a past District Commander and life member of American Legion Post #154.  Rug was also a member of the Navy Cruisers and Sailors Association and valiantly served his country during World War II and the Korean War in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Lake Champlain and the cruiser USS Helena.  He loved to attend the ship reunions and continue relationships with his former ship mates.  Rug’s family would like to thank Faith Hospice for their tender care and especially Amy, Becky, and Kathy for their love and support.  Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at Wesley Park United Methodist Church, 1150 32nd St. SW, Wyoming,  with Rev. Dean Prentiss officiating.  Interment Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.  Relatives and friends may meet the family Tuesday from 4-7 pm at Matthysse-Kuiper-DeGraaf Funeral Home (Wyoming) 4031 Clyde Park SW and one hour prior to the service at church.  Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Wesley Park United Methodist Church Youth Group.

Rug Harrington was a stalwart of the City of Wyoming. He passionately represented the Wyoming citizens and gave meaning to the city motto "the City of Vision and Progress". His input into our government was sorely missed when he left government. please accept our condolences.
