Paul Goebel

March 31, 2021

Paul Edward Goebel (“Wally”), age 52 of Hudsonville, a loving husband, father, grandpa (“bubba”), son, brother, uncle, and friend, is safely in the arms of his Savior Jesus Christ. Paul was a doer! He sought out literally anyone he could find to serve. James 1:22 states, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” Paul exemplified this verse, and it brought him great joy to be helping others: mowing a neighbor’s lawn, video taping Unity athletic games, washing a widow’s car, building homes in Guatemala, or taking someone on a boat ride out on Lake Michigan. Paul had a servant’s heart and he lived it! He was employed at Western Michigan Fleet Parts for many years. He was a family man and wanted the best for Nancy and his family. Paul was very proud of his children and granddaughter. He cared greatly for them and was involved in whatever they chose to do. He loved Nancy deeply and appreciated her so much as his life partner. He found pure joy while snowmobiling on the UP trails or boating in 100 foot deep water out on Lake Michigan, thanking his Lord and Savior for the beauty in creation.

Paul was preceded in death by his brothers, James and David and his father-in-law, Ron Motman. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; children, Kendra & David Chesterman, Kam & Abbigal Goebel, Katrina Goebel & fiancé, Austin Steenwyk, Klaire Goebel; granddaughter, Sophia Chesterman; parents, Ed & Carol Goebel, Bill & Judy Motman Covert; sisters, Mari & Deb Goebel, sister-in-law, Dena Goebel; brothers and sisters-in-law, Sara & Troy Billin, Joel Motman, Beth Motman and fiancé, Dennis Morgan; many special aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. We thank God for Paul and know we will see him again in heaven. We love you, Paul!

A private graveside service was held at Georgetown Township Cemetery. A memorial visitation will be on Sunday, April 11 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at Hillcrest Christian Reformed Church, 3617 Hillcrest Rd., Hudsonville. A memorial service is planned for Monday, April 12 at 7 pm at Hillcrest Christian Reformed Church, with Pastor Curt Walters officiating. A link to view the service via livestream will be added closer to the date of service. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Paradise Bound Ministries or to Unity Christian High School athletics.

Sincerest sympathy to Nancy, the family and all those so impacted by the loss of Paul. Even though it’s been years since our friendship in grade school, I recall with fondness our laughs, boyish activity’s and talks that can only occur between elementary school boys! Seeing and talking to him years later at Holland Christian and Unity games, we met with smiles that brought me back to the good old days. As Easter is upon us, it reminds me that the hope is real for those of us that are at the cross and that I and all of us will be reunited with our friend once again! Praying for peace, comfort and His strength during this time.

Will never forget our families growing up together. Sledding in the backyard “hill,” ice skating in the front yard, water skiing. You were loyal and had a great laugh. Our thoughts are with our Goebel friends. So long Wally.

On the sidelines of sporting events, Paul was so often engagingly growing friendship among people. While we mourn, let us hold the family as best we can imagine and continue to lean into the hope of the resurrection. Easter will someday be fully realized. Much love to you, Goebel family.

I will forever miss you and your infectious smile and laugh Paul. You were always one of my favorite people to see at our games back in the day, sunday morning chit chats just me and you at church before everyone else arrived, I will miss you and am thankful for those memories. To the family, my wife and I weep with and for you, and will graciously ask the Lord for peace and strength for you now and as you move forward. We are beyond sorry for this unimaginable loss and mean it when I say we are here for you if there is anything that we can do to help you now or in the future.
