Remembering Lee Roy Hegstrand

Lee Roy Hegstrand, 84 of Grand Rapids left peacefully on Saturday, August 16, 2025, while on a dream vacation in the Canadian Rockies with his wife.  A beloved husband, father, and grandfather will always be remembered for his generosity to family, his love of democracy, and his love of the outdoors.

Lee was born on June 30, 1941, to Clarence Hegstrand and Elvera Johanson, where he grew up as their only child in Robbinsdale, MN. He graduated with a BA in history from Mankato State University. From there he continued his education at the University of MN where he earned a MA in Russian Area Studies. Next, he went to the University of Wisconsin where he completed his PhD in Economic Geography.

Lee had a designer carpet business and worked for GE as a support person in the engineering department. In addition, he had a passion for all things outdoors including canoeing, backpacking, camping, hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing.

On May 19,1973, Lee married the love of his life, Linda Kozel. They shared a life together that lasted 52 years and yielded 2 children and 5 grandchildren. He was dedicated to his family.

Lee is survived by his wife Linda; his son, Glen (Abby) Hegstrand; his daughter, Karen (Scott) Bolhuis as well as his grandchildren, Zoe Hegstrand, Logan Hegstrand, Anders Hegstrand, Leah Bolhuis, and Hailey Bolhuis. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Elvera Hegstrand.

We are shocked and saddened by Lee's passing. On July 24,2025 we received an upbeat email from Lee, telling us the plans for the adventure in the Canadian Rockies, as he said "So much to see and do!" "Hope our 80 year old bodies will hold out." Alas, thankfully the trip appeared to be a success and he lived out another dream. We have known Lee and Linda for over 50 years, having all been in graduate school together in Madison and having married a couple of weeks apart. Over the years, we have seen each other skiing in northern WISCONSIN, ENJOYING Madison, Denver, Lexdington, as well as East Grand RAPIDS. We exchanged book ideas and political articles and shared his concern for the future of America! Our best thoughts to Linda, and the kids who are close by. May they have many happy memories of a long life. Karen Mingst and Robert Stauffer - Karen Mingst
