Lee Roy Hegstrand

Lee Roy Hegstrand, 84 of Grand Rapids left peacefully on Saturday, August 16, 2025, while on a dream vacation in the Canadian Rockies with his wife.  A beloved husband, father, and grandfather will always be remembered for his generosity to family, his love of democracy, and his love of the outdoors.

Lee was born on June 30, 1941, to Clarence Hegstrand and Elvera Johanson, where he grew up as their only child in Robbinsdale, MN. He graduated with a BA in history from Mankato State University. From there he continued his education at the University of MN where he earned a MA in Russian Area Studies. Next, he went to the University of Wisconsin where he completed his PhD in Economic Geography. 

Lee had a designer carpet business and worked for GE as a support person in the engineering department. In addition, he had a passion for all things outdoors including canoeing, backpacking, camping, hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing. 

On May 19,1973, Lee married the love of his life, Linda Kozel. They shared a life together that lasted 52 years and yielded 2 children and 5 grandchildren. He was dedicated to his family.

Lee is survived by his wife Linda; his son, Glen (Abby) Hegstrand; his daughter, Karen (Scott) Bolhuis as well as his grandchildren, Zoe Hegstrand, Logan Hegstrand, Anders Hegstrand, Leah Bolhuis, and Hailey Bolhuis. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Elvera Hegstrand.

His Celebration of Life will be held from Noon to 3 pm on Monday, September 22, 2025 at the Grand Rapids Yacht Club on Reeds Lake, 740 Lakeside Drive SE, in East Grand Rapids. Words of Remembrance will be spoken at 12:30 pm. A luncheon will follow. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sierra Club or the National Parks Foundation.
