Remembering Laura Niemann

Laura Niemann, age 61, of Caledonia, Michigan passed away peacefully surrounded by family and those she loved on Sunday, June 7, 2026. Laura was born in Flint, Michigan,  July 5, 1964 and was the oldest of four children. She graduated from MacArthur High School in Saginaw Michigan, in 1982 before receiving her Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering and Master’s in Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan. She then worked as an environmental engineer at Environmental Information Logistics, (EIL), in Caledonia, alongside her husband, Mike, for many years.

Mike and Laura have been married for thirty-two years after meeting on a work trip in Italy. The couple made many lifelong friendships in Caledonia and while traveling throughout Europe over the years. Laura and Mike’s two children, Chris and David, could always count on their mom to be supportive of their academic and musical pursuits and love of animals, particularly cats.

Laura was an avid reader. She had an incredible memory and could recite a poem or song title without hesitation. Laura will be remembered for her strong will, quick wit, sense of humor, and being generous and kind to everyone she met.

She was preceded in death by her father, Denis Makuch. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Mike Niemann; sons, Chris Niemann (Julie Doctor), David Niemann (Mary Francis); mother, Diana Makuch; sister and brothers, Lisa Makuch (Craig Kunitser), Mike (Johnna) Makuch, Mark Makuch; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life memorial will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 616 E. Main St. SE, Caledonia. The family invites you to “Come as You Are”; if you knew Laura, you know she loved to feel casual and relaxed. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to The American Cancer Society, Michigan Public Radio or The Humane Society of West Michigan

Laura was such a wonderful person and truly one of a kind! She was my mentor and friend for over 20 years! She was like a second mom to me in many ways! I already miss her so much and will cherish so many things about a woman who I truly admired from the first day I met her! She could always make me laugh even when we were up against deadlines, exhausted and mentally drained! Oh, the stories we shared!

— Emily Nelson

Laura was truly an amazing person. I always loved talking with her and she was so vibrant. Aside from all the permitting work we discussed, we caught up on what our families were doing and she always talked about her boys and how proud she was of them. I know she touched so many people's lives over all these years. It was an honor to know her and she will be missed.

In a world full of copies, there was nobody quite like Laura. She cared deeply about the people around her, and I was lucky to know that care firsthand. I will miss her very much.

Laura was a friend. She connected with my kids instantly during a visit to her office as someone only as nurturing as her could. She will be missed.

She was always a friend and a mentor to me. I guess I can now refer to her as Mom again without her getting mad at me.... Miss you
