Laura Niemann, age 61, of Caledonia, Michigan passed away peacefully surrounded by family and those she loved on Sunday, June 7, 2026. Laura was born in Flint, Michigan, July 5, 1964 and was the oldest of four children. She graduated from MacArthur High School in Saginaw Michigan, in 1982 before receiving her Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering and Master’s in Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan. She then worked as an environmental engineer at Environmental Information Logistics, (EIL), in Caledonia, alongside her husband, Mike, for many years.
Mike and Laura have been married for thirty-two years after meeting on a work trip in Italy. The couple made many lifelong friendships in Caledonia and while traveling throughout Europe over the years. Laura and Mike’s two children, Chris and David, could always count on their mom to be supportive of their academic and musical pursuits and love of animals, particularly cats.
Laura was an avid reader. She had an incredible memory and could recite a poem or song title without hesitation. Laura will be remembered for her strong will, quick wit, sense of humor, and being generous and kind to everyone she met.
She was preceded in death by her father, Denis Makuch. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Mike Niemann; sons, Chris Niemann (Julie Doctor), David Niemann (Mary Francis); mother, Diana Makuch; sister and brothers, Lisa Makuch (Craig Kunitser), Mike (Johnna) Makuch, Mark Makuch; and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life memorial will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 616 E. Main St. SE, Caledonia. The family invites you to “Come as You Are”; if you knew Laura, you know she loved to feel casual and relaxed. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to The American Cancer Society, Michigan Public Radio or The Humane Society of West Michigan.
