Harold met the love of his life, Sarah, when they both attended Brookhaven High School in Columbus, OH. They waited until she finished college to marry, and were wed on August 3rd, 1968. They started married life in Traverse City, MI, where he worked for Commercial Equipment Company (CEC) as a copy machine repairman. His territory covered all of northern lower Michigan and half of the UP. They led the youth group at East Bay Calvary Church. After moving to Gaylord, MI, they were part of Calvary Baptist Church of Gaylord. They moved in 1971 to Grand Rapids and Harold worked in the repair center of CEC. They became active in Calvary Baptist Church of Grand Rapids, and were part of a team, teaching 5th grade Sunday School. They added a son, Timothy, and a daughter, Carollynn, to their family in the early 70's. They joined a group of believers known as Maranatha Fellowship in Grandville, MI, in 1974. They also found an old school house on 100th St. in Byron Center, and starting in 1975, Harold spent his spare time remodeling it. There they added to their family, another son, Jeffrey, and a daughter, Laura. When circumstances led to a change, their church became known as Grandville Christian Fellowship (GCF), Harold became a teaching elder and shared the ministry of preaching with the other elders and was in charge of the benevolence ministry. The church moved to Hudsonville and changed its name to Georgetown Christian Fellowship (still GCF). Harold continued to preach until choosing to step down in retirement. Harold was the Cubmaster of Cub Scout Pack 3250 of Byron Center for a number of years, while he ran a Cub den in his home. Harold and Sarah enjoyed the privilege of home schooling their children, and together, they spoke to support groups across the state and at the State Convention. Harold and Sarah were also the invited guest speakers at a couples' retreat for a church in Three Rivers. For a number of years, Harold and Sarah were members of the Board at the Home School Building (HSB) in Grand Rapids, and Harold was in charge of the Bookstore in the HSB. When Harold retired from CEC he started his own copier business, focusing on rentals and repairs. He ran Hall Business Machines for 10 years, and then had a short stint of working for Hope Network. Harold remodeled the home on 100th St to accommodate Sarah's father and brother. He once said that in all the years he'd been married, he'd had additional relatives living with him more often than not. He was very generous to offer his home to family and friends who needed a place to stay. Harold was known for his humor, generosity, and wise advice. There was always a story to tell, and he always left people laughing. He mentored many young folks in practical skills, having many of them work on projects with him around the house and with his or their cars. In all, Harold was the father of four, grandfather of 12, with many spiritual sons and daughters who looked to him for counsel and advice. He entered peacefully into his heavenly abode after a year-long struggle with congestive heart failure and kidney failure.
