Enrique Alvarez

Enrique (Hank) Alvarez, age 96, of Grand Rapids, passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2025. Enrique worked as a master craftsman for General Motors at Fisher Body Plant No. 2 for 33 years, after which he was able to enjoy 38 years of retirement! Enrique was a gentle soul who took pleasure in all the little things in life. He was an avid Detroit Lions and Tigers fan. He enjoyed drinking a cold one while kicking back listening to his Tejano music. Enrique bowled on the Alma Latina bowling team at Wenger's for many years. He also enjoyed visiting the Gun Lake Casino, where at the age of 90, he won a Jeep! More than anything though, Enrique loved his family. He was his grandkids’ and great-grandkids’ biggest fan. He always made an effort to attend all their events. He cherished the time he spent with them. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Susan; son, Michael; granddaughter, Whitney; son-in-law, Charlie Brock; and his five siblings. He is survived by his children, Debra (and special friend, Norman) Brock, Rebecka (Jesus) Mata, Douglas (Miki) Alvarez, Victoria Alvarez; daughter-in-law, Shelley Alvarez; many, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 3937 Wilson Ave. SW, Grandville,  with Fr. Stephen Durkee presiding. The burial will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with family on Monday, April 21, from 6-8 p.m. with the Rosary being prayed at 7:30 p.m. at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4145 Chicago Dr. SW, Grandville. An additional visitation will be held on Tuesday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Faith Hospice in his name.
