David Tyson Peahl

July 2, 1952 ~
August 2, 2022

David Tyson Peahl, age 70, of Wayland, passed away unexpectedly on August 2, 2022. Dave began his adventurous life from a young age. He spent his childhood surrounded by his close-knit family on Lake Minnetonka; a place that held fond memories of lake activities, skiing, and water-sports. His family moved to Wheaton, IL and he graduated from Wheaton Central High School in 1970. He attended Huron College in South Dakota and later played soccer at College of Dupage. Dave furthered his adventures with a passion for aviation and began flight training. In one year, Dave earned his private, instrument, and commercial pilot’s licenses. He continued by achieving his multi-engine and instructor rating which led to obtaining his first flying job as a flight instructor at Dupage Airport. After flying several years as a corporate pilot, he began his commercial aviation career with American Eagle in 1986. He later transferred to American Airlines as a first officer on the Boeing 737 and retired in 2017, flying internationally on the Boeing 787. In retirement his passion for flying continued to impact others as he began to instruct and mentor aviation enthusiasts. He kept active playing hockey, snow skiing, waterskiing, and traveling with his wife, Treece. Dave was a mentor and teacher at heart and will be remembered for many inspiring stories and life lessons. With a gift of conversation, Dave had a genuine, compassionate interest in connecting with people. His happiest times were spent at the lake or anywhere with his family, grandchildren and dear friends. He will be greatly missed for his smile, ambition to make meaningful connections with everyone he met, and his positive outlook on life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Jeanne Peahl. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 31 years, Patrice; children, Matthew Peahl, Kirstin Peahl, Brendan Peahl; grandchildren, Taylor, Kristien, Graysen, Madison; siblings, Robert (Melodie) Peahl, Susan (Jeff Bradley) Peahl; step-mother, Margaret Peahl; step-siblings, Douglas (Patricia) Grunnet, Mike (Deb) Grunnet, Vickie (David) Halvorson; numerous nieces, nephews and was inspiring in so many lives that he was acknowledged as uncle and grandpa by many. Relatives and friends may meet the family Wednesday, August 10, from 5-8 pm at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4646 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, Kentwood. A memorial service will be held at 12pm Thursday, August 11, with an hour of visitation prior, at Gun Lake Community Church, 12200 W M 179 Hwy, Wayland, with Pastor Dan Beyer officiating. Family requests fellow pilots to come in their uniform. I’ll miss my cousin Dave so much! I loved how if he thought of you, he’d call! Whether on the way to the airport to train someone, or on his way home from a hockey game, or after a trip with Treece, or a boating/skiing weekend with the family. He loved life, and was so fun to talk to. I remember playing with Dave as a kid at Grandma and Grandpas house at Lake Minnetonka. Remember how Dave, Bob and I wanted to swim across North Arm so Grandpa tooled along beside us till we made it! We loved seeing our grandpa, and uncles and dads in the Aqua Jesters and I know all that lake time helped him become the competitive, excellent swimmer and skier he became. Then times together when we were newlyweds with our respective spouses and little children. Too many fun memories to recount, but Dave will be sorely missed by the entire Peahl family and all the cousins! My love and prayers to Dave’s family for your loss. Love you all! Cousin Cindy

To the Family and Friends of Captain Dave Peahl, I first met Dave in 1986 when Dave got hired at Simmons Airlines. Larry Simmons had started an airline in 1980 to serve the UP to provide a more direct route to Lansing and Detroit. I was hired at DTW in March of that year to make a total of 4 pilots with the two 8 passenger piper Navajos that replaced 2 Aerostars that had been used as charter planes previously. Things happened quickly for the airline and that year we more than doubled , added a Chicago route and acquired our first 19 passenger turbo-prop aircraft. By 1982 we fleet of about 14 aircraft and over 60 pilots serving Detroit, Chicago and most of the surrounding midwest states and in 1988 American Airlines bought Simmons Airlines. I moved to the Marquette area in late 1980 serving as chief pilot and watched this little airline grow which never stopped growing until the events of September of 2001. One of the reasons that Simmons was so successful is because of the character and the commitment of the employees and especially the pilots, like Dave Peahl. Dave made a great impression during his interview and was hired immediately and later, actually became my chief pilot. Dave had such a wonderful personality and had all of the characteristics that make a good pilot. Everyone liked flying with Dave and learning from Dave. He was always positive and a good problem solver as well. Over the years I had the pleasure of training him, Susan and I flew with him on the line and spent time with him on layovers. We enjoyed being around him and his zest for life, family, friends, flying and of course, water skiing! In 1999 I transferred to American Airlines and regretfully lost touch with Dave. But all of us can remember the ones that shine brightly in our lives. Those of you that had the privilege of knowing Dave, know that he continues to shine. He will be greatly missed. Dear Peahl Family: I have never met any of you, but I can say I had the pleasure and honor to know Dave. I really only met him a few years ago when we started playing hockey together on the same team at the Eagles ice rink 60 and over league. The author of his obituary really nailed it IMO. I can add that not only was Dave a good and enthusiastic hockey player, but also a great human being and a fine addition to our men's league. He had a larger than life personality, a huge heart, and was always a great presence in the locker room and in the lobby after games where we tip a beer or two. He was one of those unique individuals in life where one could rightly ask, "who wouldn't like/love him?" He will be sadly missed, and my condolences to your family. I would've liked to attend one of the functions on Wednesday or Thursday, but unfortunately I'm out of town this week. God bless Dave and his family. Jerry Gross

Dear Dave, I was really looking forward to spending time with you when on the lake for a week August 18-25. You remind me a lot of my husband, and I was excited about us all spending time together. I knew you two would get along great! You have a peaceful soul and yet seem to have such a zest for life! A gentle giant. I am not sure why God wanted you at this time in your life. I know that your family and none of us were ready to let you go. But one thing I know for sure is that the only thing that you care about now is that your family is taking care of. Knowing how special you were to so many, I am sure we will all do our best to make this happen. We will miss you but know you will always be there in spirit.

Our memories of Dave are just to many to recount all of them here. There were few conversations with him that didn't include "Remember that lake volleyball game where you tried to tell me how to play the game?" He loved that we shared a competitive spirit. Dave found something to love about everyone that he met and that is what made him so loveable in return. He lived life large and always with a smile. We will miss his stories and the feeling that the sun shined just a little brighter when we were with him. He loved his family and is so proud of each of his kids. I pray that each of you feel his spirit each time the sun is shining down on you!

Dave was a kind hearted soul! I don’t think he knew how much Dawn and I appreciated him always making sure Dawn got on the airplane when flying ORD-GRR! He wouldn’t get on the airplane until he made sure Dawn got a seat! That meant the world to us! May GOD wrap his loving arms around you and your family! Randy Hoffman

We were so saddened to hear of Dave's passing. Dave was such an accomplished man, and a kind and caring person. The last time we spoke to him was just a couple weeks ago when he stopped over to talk. He really cared about others and will be so missed by this Gun Lake community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. Norm, , Beverly and Daniel Anderson.

Too many memories to pick a favorite but one has been coming to mind this week of when we were boating with “umppa Dave” Uncle Dave, and a toy blew off the boat and without even thinking first Umppa Dave went flying off the boat and retrieved the toy for a very happy toddler niece! He was a big teddy bear with a HUGE heart! Will miss his laugh, his smile, his stories and his presence in the room! Heaven has a great soul arriving and we were blessed while we had him here. RIP Umppa Dave, We love you, Mike and Karen xoxo

To the Peahl Family and Friends and all loved ones: Life is short..... but it is wide. Dave made sure to go from one end of that spectrum to the other end, quickly, and then right back again, repeating it all throughout the years. To fly west is something we all must do, and as always, it's done too early. The pleasure of flying with Dave was boundless. He is "a damn good stick", as we say, and as as been alluded to already, not only a good aviator, but the proverbial spinner of yarns too!! It always made for an enjoyable four day trip with Dave, not knowing on which soapbox, or which rabbit hole, or what four hour witticism would await his flying partner. Life is now more grey with Dave not in it, even though we haven't seen each other in a few years. To know he's up there looking down on us is a great re-assurance. Also, and I can say with great alacrity, he's also probably water skiing with St Peter as I type this. Until one day we fly again Dave, where we all meet at the bar, there will be no regrets, no recriminations, no excuses, just all us aviators drinking and singing around a piano, where the tales are tall, and so are our hearts, knowing that Dave, left everyone he touched, no matter how brief or breadth, better for it. God Bless Ya Dave, and to all the Peahls and all of us, for having this great experience of knowing Dave.
