William Norman Edwards

William Norman Edwards, age 71, of Grand Rapids, passed with the grace of a peaceful death after a long battle with COPD on Sunday, January 20, 2019. He was preceded in death by his wife, Susie; his parents, Thomas and Catherine Edwards; brothers, Jerry, Terry, and John Edwards. William was an accomplished songwriter and musician who found salvation sharing his time and talents with his St.Thomas Parish family. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Jesse Edwards (Monica), Heather McGartland (Maureen O’Brien); brothers, Tom “Bobby” and Marilyn Edwards, Dave and Kim Edwards, Gary and Marion Edwards; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, January 24, 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, 1449 Wilcox Park Dr. SE, Grand Rapids, with Fr. Jim Chelich presiding. Relatives and friends may meet the family on Thursday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to St. Thomas the Apostle Parish.

I knew William as Uncle Billy aka Uncle Funky. Him and my Aunt Susie were the wild aunt and uncle every niece or nephew should have in their lives. They both were eccentric and fun! They both had a love of music and style that together inspired and moved anyone that was ever in their presence... I speak of them both because together they were one. My uncle Billy was a great influence. He influenced my dad, his brother and best friend to play music as well as his greatest legacy Jesse. Growing up, music was very much a part of our family. I remember family gatherings of them all playing music either in a garage, living room or basement and all us kids just dancing and having fun! His voice, raspy yet smooth resonates in my mind and forever on my soul.... I love you Uncle Funky....rest easy with Aunt Susie...tell my dad I miss him as well as Uncle Terry and Jerry and of course Grandma Edwards.
