Remembering Wendell “Wink” Vander Heuvel

Wendell Lee Vander Heuvel, affectionately known to family and friends as “Wink,” passed away peacefully at his home in Jenison, Michigan, on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at the age of 66.

Wink was born on August 3, 1959, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Howard and Marian Vander Heuvel. He dedicated many years of service to DTE Energy before retiring in 2020.

Wink never met a stranger. Known for his quick wit, infectious sense of humor, and remarkable ability to strike up a conversation with anyone, he was a friend to all who knew him. He loved socializing, sharing stories, and making people laugh. His warm personality and genuine interest in others created countless friendships throughout his life.

A devoted fan of the University of Michigan and all Michigan sports, Wink proudly wore his favorite colors—maize and blue. He enjoyed traveling, coaching Little League baseball and softball, and spending time with family and friends. Those who knew him well also knew his favorite drink was a “14,” better known as a 7 and 7.

Among Wink’s greatest accomplishments were his marriage to the love of his life, Jayne; his children; and his cherished grandchildren. He faithfully served as a deacon in his church and lived his life grounded in his Christian faith. He found peace and assurance in his faith, confident that he would one day be welcomed into the presence of his Savior.

Wink was preceded in death by his mother, Marian (“Pic”) Vander Heuvel; his father, Howard Vander Heuvel; his stepfather, Roger Webster; his stepmother, Char Vander Heuvel; his beloved son, Aaron; and his brothers, Scott and Timmy.

He is lovingly survived by his wife of 25 years, Jayne; his daughter, Laura Elizabeth Carney (Mike); his son, Nickolas Lee Vander Heuvel (Joy); his treasured grandchildren, Madilynn, Mason, Graham, and Bronson; and his siblings, Barb (Paul) France, Mary (Gary) Markert, and Laurie Venema. He is also survived by hundreds of friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

Wink’s kindness, humor, unwavering faith, and genuine love for people left a lasting impact on everyone he met. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever loved by his family, his friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Graveside Services will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday July 25, 2026, at Allendale Township Cemetery, 12655 60th Ave.  Relatives and friends may meet the family Friday, July 24 from 5-8 pm at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW. I remember the first time I met Wink. I had just started at Vitales as a host and food runner. I brought some food up to the bar and wink tried to tell me it was for him. (It wasn’t, he was just pulling my leg). He always greeted me and would stick his tongue out at me, always joking around. I considered him to be my “first regular” even though he only sat at my tables once, with his buddies from highschool. He was so excited to see them all that day. When I turned 21, he bought me my first drink. An appletini. When it came to the table he said “oh, what is that??” and rolled his eyes and laughed. I can still hear him saying it. That’s the best way to describe the light, energy, and love that Wink brought to those around him. When we heard, everyone who knew him came together immediately to celebrate his life and the impact he had on all of us. He is so loved, and so missed, by so many. But Heaven has gained the most beautiful angel.

I worked with Wink many years at DTE in the office area. He always had a million dollar smile that seemed to light up the whole room. I sit in the corner office with my MSU flag surrounded by a sea of Blue! We had great times going back and forth but we were on the same page when we were against Alabama or ohio state! God bless your family thru this time.

I worked with Wink at DTE for many years. He was always the guy wandering around the office chatting with folks and always making folks laugh and smile. I think he used to say he didn't get hired at the gas company to actually work. He got hired because of his good looks and to build up morale! As he always said "Best looking guy at the gas company!" He was always singing some song throughout the day. Would drive his coworkers crazy at times cause he also thought he was the best singer! Sometimes I would give him a song of the day to sing! Will miss your presence and joy you brought to everyone's lives at times! Rest in peace.

Although I knew Wink prior, he was my very first customer as a real estate agent. His gregarious and fun sense of humor, his love of family and ability to always see things through a positive lens will be what I remember. I’m grateful for being part of a special milestone, love the person that he was and know the angels are enjoying such a wonderful new member in the kingdom of heaven. Love you buddy!!
