Wayne K. Hubers, 85, of Grand Rapids, MI went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023.

Wayne was born to parents, George and Gertrude Hubers on Sept. 1, 1937 on his family’s farm near Pease, MN. The third of four siblings, he grew up tending the farm until he left to attend Calvin College.

After graduating in 1959, he married his sweetheart Cheryl Brower. Wayne earned a Master’s Degree while teaching at Kalamazoo Christian High School. In 1964 he joined the first faculty of Calvin Christian High School in Grandville, MI and taught there until 1970. He then became the first full-time Director of Financial Aid at Calvin College, serving in that role for 29 years and retiring in 1999.

He enjoyed his retirement years with Cheryl and their family at their home on Indian Lake near Howard City, MI. He loved working with his hands, planning and taking trips with his family, and actively volunteering in his church.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Cheryl; a son, Todd (Natalie) Hubers of Grand Rapids; and a daughter, Tami (Doug) Boock of Jenison; four grandchildren, Matthew Hubers, Lauren Hubers, Ellie Boock and Kaden Boock; and two great-grandchildren, Sam and Lucy Hubers. He is also survived by siblings Harris Hubers, and Joyce (Bob) Warolin of Minneapolis, MN, and Marian Johnson of Grand Haven, MI.

Wayne had a true servant’s heart and lived a life of devoted service to his Lord, his family, and his community. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, and was dearly loved by his family.

Our sincere sympathy to 'Mr. Hubers" loved ones! Tom and I were in his math classes at Calvin Christian High. What a kind man he was, even to those who did not excel at math. (Gwen speaking 😊 All of our memories of him are positive! This is sent with a prayer for comfort as you miss such a sweet husband, Dad, and Grandpa.

Dear Cheryl, My sympathy to you and Todd and Tami in the passing of Wayne. We take comfort and joy in knowing that he is now a resident in his eternal home. But that does not remove the sorrow and pain that you are feeling at this moment. Be assured of my prayers for you and your family during this difficult time. I consider it a great blessing that I came to know Wayne and had the opportunity to work with him at Calvin Christian High. We had a very rich professional and personal relationship that contributed so much to the life that God gave to us. And what a wonderful group we had at the high school to work together that was also a great blessing. I think it was Ray, John, Jay, Herm, Nellie, Roger, Ed, Wayne, Bill. I probably am missing someone but it was such a privilege and joy to work together. And the wives also contributed so much to the richness of our relationship. I think the last time I saw you and Wayne was when Kathy and I visited you at your home on Indian Lake. That was many years ago but I still remember it very clearly. I only wish now that we had more visits together. I am not able to come to the funeral home because I am dealing with some serious balance and hearing issues. Please accept my condolences in this manner even though it would be so nice to see you. Sent with love, Bill Gritter

Wayne was a very special saint who lived just across the hall here at CLGL. He cherished his wife Cher and the fortunate friends who knew him. He will be so missed!
