Vicki J. Marsh

March 17, 1945 ~
December 23, 2021

Vicki J. Near Kaechele Marsh, 76, of Middleville, was welcomed into her heavenly home on December 23, 2021, while visiting her grandchildren in Tulsa, OK. She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Helen Near; husband, Carl Kaechele; and brother, Kenneth Near. She is lovingly survived by her children (grandchildren): Betsy Marsh Strader (Robbie, Drew & Sam), Jeff and Kelly Marsh (Cameron, Clayton & Hudson), Dr. Robb and Amy Marsh (Jaedon, Ava, & Ainsley), Scott Marsh (Emerson & Sullivan); sisters, Mary and Rex Weaver and Betty Near; many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews; and special friend, Joan Tabor. Vicki’s family was her crowning glory, and she was always on the go. It didn’t matter where her children and grandchildren lived, she was always eager to see them whether that meant driving back and forth to Hamilton or Indianapolis, or flying to Tulsa, or Seattle. Vicki was a strong woman of faith, and her relationship with Jesus was always her rock. God was the reason Vicki became a teacher and she spent a lifetime praising Him, and blessing others through music. Vicki graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education in 1967. She taught elementary music for the Caledonia School System for five years. She served as the pianist for Peace Reformed Church (now Peace Church), when services were held in the Caledonia High School in 1965. Vicki loved choirs and was the choir director at Peace until her husband, Carl Kaechele, passed away suddenly in 1972. Vicki remarried and moved to Indianapolis where she continued her ministry by serving as the music director for the Southminster Presbyterian church. She returned to Michigan in 1996, worked at Thornapple Kellogg High School, and also served as the music director for the Middleville Methodist Church. Vicki was the director of the hand bell choir, traveling throughout the West Michigan area touching the hearts of many, especially those in local nursing homes. She served in this capacity until the time of her passing. Vicki followed in her mother’s footsteps and loved making quilts and mittens for others. Even as she was declining in health, God’s spirit was shown through her continued devotion to touching the lives of others. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at Peace Church, 6950 Cherry Valley Ave, Middleville, MI 49333. Live streaming of the service can be viewed at www.peacechurch.cc/live A private burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family during a visitation from 4-7 PM on Friday, January 7, 2022 at Peace Church. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations in Vicki’s honor be sent to the American Diabetes Association or the American Autism Association.

Vicki was precious to the Dunn family. She shared her gifts and talents liberally, playing the piano at weddings, crocheting baby blankets and sewing quilts to bless so many. She hosted large gatherings among the Marsh and Dunn families. She was the hub that kept our families in closer contact over the years. Vicki was a faithful friend, and it was a true delight to be in her presence. She will be dearly missed. Our hearts go out to her children, grandchildren and sisters. We had sincerely hoped to share our thoughts in person but traveling from Kentucky today became inadvisable. Praying for God’s comfort upon each of you.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of my dear friend Vicki. She was one of the most caring and optimistic people I have ever known and our friendship has endured for decades since high school. We attended MYF at the Methodist church together and played clarinets in the marching band together. I clearly remember the day she was chosen for first chair over me. Her talent for music was obviously much greater than mine. We wrote letters to each other 2-3 times a month when attending different universities in the 1960s and it is typical that she saved every one I sent her and returned them all to me about 10 years ago. I remember her phone call to me from Butterworth ER asking me to help her find out why no one would tell her what happened to Carl, and spending several days sitting with her while Carl was in ICU. I stood beside her during her wedding, and her home in Indiana was a stopping point for my trips to Michigan after I moved to the South. After she moved back to Michigan, every trip I made there included time with her. We called each other on birthdays and sent each other crafting things we made. When we buried my mother I didn't think about having music in the church during the service and when Vicki noticed this, she went directly to the organ and began playing Amazing Grace, my mother's favorite hymn. That's the kind of friend she was. To Mary, Betty, Betsy, Jeff, Robb, Scott and your spouses and children, I am so very sorry for your loss.

My sister and I just visited with cousin Vicki at Irvin Rodgers's funeral in December. She has always shown us a warm, loving heart. When we were little, we loved going to her home for the big 'Rodgers' Christmas get together. Our love goes out to her family and close ones and we rejoice that Vicki was a follower of Jesus. - Carrie Rodgers-O'Neal

It has been years since I have been able to see Vicki. She was a wonderful choir director! She even gave me the courage to play my Irish whistle at MUMC. She loved her children and grandchildren so very much and talked about them always. Her gifts will be missed. My condolences to your family.

I’ve only known Vicki for a couple of years since working at MUMC but grew very fond of her. She was passionate about playing for the congregation at the church and loved that so many appreciated her ministry. She was just a dedicated friend, mother and grandmother, and I’m really going to miss her. I still can’t believe she won’t walk through my office door again. Good speed, Vicki. You’re home. ❤️

I knew Vicky a short time in my life but reaped all the benefits of our relationship at Southminster for all my life. As a young technology interested individual Vicki saw that, encouraged me, and trusted me to help with sound and recording for some wonderful cantata’s before I ventured out to college and work. With the additional guidance of my soon to be brother in law Mark Brady who was really doing the important work but also teaching me, this was critical to my future development. Looking back I am sure Vicki knew this and I didn’t have a clue. My condolences to all the family.
