Valerie Joan Smrcina

​Valerie Joan (Dion) Smrcina, age 86, passed away peacefully Monday morning, July 12, 2021. She was born May 11, 1935, to Halley and Helen Dion in Muskegon, Michigan. Val graduated from St. Jeans High School in 1953 and moved to Montague, MI where she raised her family. She worked for Multi-Products Credit Union in Wyoming, MI for most of her career. Everyone who knew Val loved her. Her grandkids all called her Mim and loved spending time with her. Val was always happy to go junkin’, or to her beloved Lake Michigan or to play the penny slots with her best friend Nancy at the “River”. She had a wonderful laugh, a great sense of humor, enjoyed singing, art and books. Valerie is survived by her daughters, Vicki Stratton, Joanne (Scott Peck) Smrcina, Tina (Tony) Larson; grandchildren, Tracy (JL) Divers, Tabetha Smrcina, Matt (Dustin Christensen) Bamm, Kristen (Andy) Abbott, Alex (Ayesha Husain) Larson, Sam (Monse Rodriguez Warden) Larson, Hayley (Julien) Lefèvre, Grace (Peter) Stich, Chelsea Gehl, Doug (Mandy) Stratton, DeLanna Saylor; 12 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; sister, Mary C. Jones; brother Dan (Kay) Dion. She was preceded in death by her son, Robert Smrcina Jr.; son-in-law, DeWayne Stratton; her children’s father, Robert Smrcina Sr.; her parents; several brothers and sisters. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, July 22, 2021, at 1:00 PM at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 451 S Getty St., Muskegon, MI, with Father Charles Fischer presiding. A private burial will take place the same day at noon at St. Mary’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Juvenile Diabetes or Faith Hospice would be appreciated.
