Thomas J. Smart, age 51, of Jenison passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, February 14, 2016 and is now home with his Lord and Savior. Tom was a loving and compassionate man who gave to his community, his family and above all his Lord. He served in many ways, including Jenison Football Boosters, Georgetown Little League Board of Directors and Umpiring Chief, and a MHSAA Registered Baseball Umpire. Tom took great joy in volunteering with the Special Olympics as a baseball umpire and with their downhill skiing events. He was actively involved at Hager Park Church serving as an elder and deacon, singing on the praise team and serving on multiple mission trips to Guatemala with Paradise Bound Ministries. He faithfully worked at STM Manufacturing for almost 33 years, most recently as an Estimating Manager and Die Specialist. He enjoyed spending time hunting, snowmobiling, riding dirt bikes with his family, and motorcycle road trips with his wife. It gave him great joy to be involved with his children’s activities; he was their number one fan. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend of 29 years, Janet; children, Tommy, Kayla, Boyd Smart; he was a special papa to his grandson, Brayden; mother, Muriel Smart; sister, Jane and Randy Klingenberg; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Harry DeHaan, Carol and Eric Carlson, Chris and Doug DeHaan, Michelle Morgan, Paul and Kelly Sprik; many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles. He will also be treasured by many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his father, George Smart; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Rev. Hubert and Barbara Sprik; sister-in-law, Patt DeHaan; brother-in-law, Bill Morgan; uncles, John Smart, Pete Roon, Russ Roon; aunt, Grace Roon. Our family has known Tom for approximately 12 years. We spent many springs and summers on the Georgetown Little League field. It was a pleasure serving with him on the GT Little League Board for the couple of years I had served. This man was the most kind hearted man anyone could have known. He will be greatly missed by so many. He was a major asset to our community. May God give the Smart family peace in this time of difficulty. We love you very much. - Renee Thomas and Family

We often sing "I Can Only Imagine" during devotions in Guatemala. Tom sang it once for us at Hager Park Church, and we think of him whenever we sing it. It was a pleasure to serve on a few trips with Tom and Paradise Bound. We can only imagine him now, in the presence of God, forever worshiping Him. Out hearts are so very sad, but we know he is singing with the angles now. Tom was an awesome man of God, and he will be greatly missed.

I too am an Alma College alumni but knew Tom and Tommy through the West Michigan Umpires Association. Tom was always trying to learn and improve his umpiring and was a great role model to his son, Tommy. I know he is now calling balls and strikes in heaven as yes, there is baseball in heaven! All my prayers for the family and may God give you the grace to understand the glory of everlasting life!

Prayers for the family. Spent many a day on the baseball field at Hamilton High School when he and I played in the early 80s. Most recently saw him at the G'town Little League fields as he and I were umping.
