Thomas Hendrix

Thomas E. Hendrix, age 90, of Allendale, passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2023. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Nina; and son-in-law, Bill Doughty. Tom will be lovingly remembered by his children: Mike and Tammy Hendrix of York, PA; Susan Doughty; Lori and Kevin Sutter; grandchildren: Ellen Hendrix, Julia Hendrix, Meghan Doughty, Aaron and Angelica Doughty, Christopher Sutter (Luanne Ludovici), Emily Sutter; great-granddaughter, Salem Doughty; extended family and friends. Tom earned his PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and taught Geology at Indiana University and retired from Grand Valley State University. He loved teaching and earned numerous local, state, and national awards in the field of Geology. He enjoyed time in Montana; from teaching there with IU to fishing and hiking too. Tom was a Phillies, Packers, and Indiana University basketball fan. He enjoyed golfing and he was a great dad and family man. According to his wishes cremation has taken place and services will be held at a later date. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Sierra Club.

Condolences to the Hendrix family. I first met Tom as an undergrad at Grand Valley State in 1984. and was fortunate to have Tom as a professor in the Geology program. I have so many fond memories of Tom which I carry with me and he still serves as a role model of respect and higher learning. Tom's knowledge, willingness to help, unwavering standards, and generous heart remain with me to this day. Many thanks to the family for sharing Tom's life with his students. I remember him with admiration and respect from caving in Southern, IN, Baraboo WI trips to the penny poker nights with geology club members and his famous corn beef and rye sandwiches he would have ready. I am very sorry to hear of Tom's passing. He was one of my undergraduate mentors when I was a geology student at Indiana University in the ear;y 1970s, teaching structural geology and field geology, leading us on wonderful "hard rock" field trips to Wisconsin and Maine, and supervising an undergraduate research project. I lost track of him after moving around so much early in my career, but remember marveling at how much he knew about all aspects of geology in the field, how well he quarterbacked informal football games (even though I was less proficient at catching passes on the run). I remember Tom picking my daughter, Lisa and I up at our hotel when we were near them and taking us to visit Nina and the girls when Nina was so sick. He kindly took us back to the hotel. That was a treasured visit as Nina passed soon after. Tom cared. He will be missed.
