Thomas A. Olney

November 24, 2025

Thomas A. Olney, age 74 of Grand Rapids, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 24, 2025. He was born on July 26, 1951, in Battle Creek, MI, to the late Clifford and Mary (Caulkett) Olney. Tom married Linda Olney and together they shared 38 years of marriage. He was proud to be a licensed professional engineer. Tom dedicated 32 years of his career to Consumers Energy before retiring - only to return to the work he loved at Traverse City Light and Power until his final retirement. Blessed with a strong work ethic, he always appreciated being welcomed and respected by the lineman he worked alongside. Outside of work, he took immense pride in being the guy with the most tools - because he genuinely could fix anything. Over the years, Tom enjoyed boating, especially the time spent out on the water with his family. Tom also had a love for trains, building different displays and tracks at his home. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. Tom will be forever remembered for his kind, gentle, caring, and loving spirit. God has surely received another angel in heaven. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Linda; his daughter, Erica and Dan Olson; his grandsons who brought him endless joy, Thomas Hall, and Travis Olson; sister, Carol Rose (Mike Mooney); and nephew, Ronald (Jennifer) Rose. A celebration of Tom’s life will be held Monday, January 12, 2026, from 3-6 p.m. at the MKD Funeral Home Reception and Event Center, 4145 Chicago Dr., Grandville, MI. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's Association

So sad to hear of Tom’s passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to Linda and the family. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Tom for my entire life. We were born the same year in Battle Creek, and both of our fathers were linemen at Consumers Energy. Tom and I also graduated from Battle Creek Central high school. For many years, Tom and I worked together at Consumers Energy, serving on many committees together. We also worked together in Traverse City, and on two different occasions, teamed up to assist in restoring service in Texas. We also retired from Consumers Energy the same year. I will always remember Tom as a gentleman’s gentleman, who treated everyone with dignity and respect. Jay Hill

Linda & family, please accept my deepest condolences for your loss. I was a wet behind the ears engineer when I first met Tom at Consumers Energy, and we got to know each other quite well during our days in the Field Manager organization. So many fond memories. Tom was a wonderful leader, colleague, mentor and friend. Tom loved to have fun and found as much joy in everything as possible. His quick wit and one liners provided a bit of levity which helped us get through it all. Simply put, Tom was one of the good guys and I consider myself truly blessed having known him. My prayers and positive thoughts to the family.
