Sue Werkema

Sue Werkema, age 78, of Hudsonville, passed away on Friday, November 13, 2020, after a yearlong battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Don; and her parents, Al and Dena Vanden Broek. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Tom (Val) Powers, Tim (Amie) Powers, Ted (Karen) Powers, Tobin (Judy) Powers, Tyler (Michelle) Werkema, Tammy (Steve) Van Dyken; grandchildren, Kristina (Kellan), Stephanie (Jake); Trent, Josh, Bethany (Darvin), Elodie; Nathan, Kaila; Grace, Haley, EIi, Belle; Jordyn, Isaiah, Andrew; Rachel, Matthew; and honorary grandson, Adam VerMeer; great-grandchildren, Ethyn, Katelyn, Kaiden, and Konnor; brother, Bill (Bev) Vanden Broek; sister-in-law, Sue (Del) Marcus; and several nieces and nephews. Sue worked in the real estate title industry for over 30 years, making many friends along the way. They then bought a place at Sandy Pines and enjoyed many summers there. Sue was one of those people that left an impression on everyone she met, with her infectious personality and her joyous laughter (oh that wonderful laugh!). She had a zest for life and fun (and shenanigans). She had such an amazing love for God and her family. Her last words in the letters she wrote said the most important thing in life was to have a relationship with Christ, and your family. She taught us to love and to love well. She is leaving behind a beautiful legacy for her children, grandchildren, and all who knew her. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 17, 2020, at 11 a.m. at Fellowship Reformed Church, 6610 36th Ave., Hudsonville, with Pastor Earl Slotman officiating. The service will be recorded and can be viewed later that day on the MKD Funeral Home website by scrolling to the bottom of the home page and clicking on the “watch recorded services here” tab. A private family burial will take place at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Relatives and friends may meet with the family on Monday, November 16, from 5-8 p.m. at the church and Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Due to COVID, masks will be required for the visitation and the service.
