Steven VanDam

January 16, 2025

Steven James VanDam, 41, born May 30, 1983, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, tragically passed away in a jobsite accident in Ravenna, Michigan, on January 16, 2025. Known for his sarcastic humor, unapologetic outlook on life, and his “take no sh*t, give no f*cks” mentality. Steven left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his mother, Sharon Kooienga; his sister, Michelle Scudder; and his three nephews, Keegan (Kristen), Rylie, and Connor (Jenni). Let's not forget his goodest boy, Bruce… As well as his father, Bill VanDam; and extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins.

One thing about Steven is that he had a large group of friends, and those friends are undoubtedly his chosen family!

Steven was preceded in death by his great-grandmother, Marie Ezinga; grandfather, Gerald Kooienga; grandmother, Eleanor Kooienga; uncles, Larry Kooienga and Bob VanDam; and his best friend, his fur child, Frank.

A man of many passions, Steven had a special place in his heart for the outdoors. Especially hunting, even more so when it meant spending time with his nephews in the woods. Steven looked forward to the escape from the reality of day-to-day life at his hunting grounds in Fennville, this was his happy place.

Steven shared an unbreakable bond with his nephews. He loves them each so much and was dang proud watching them grow into the amazing young men they are today. Uncle Steve shared his wisdom and sense of humor —he taught them about life, and how to handle it with grit, push through, and raise a middle finger to anyone who didn't like it.

Steven was as diehard of a Detroit Lions fan as they come!! He stuck with them no matter how brutal the season. There were plenty of choice words thrown around, beer cans tossed, but the loyalty never wavered. He was a fan to the core.

A passion for heavy metal music and all things loud. Steven’s concerts and Metallica fandom were legendary. Nothing got him more excited than the roar of a crowd and a good mosh pit.

Despite repeated setbacks, he demonstrated remarkable resilience and perseverance.... Making him the man we all know and love today.

Steven’s bond with his sister Michelle was unmatched—he had a way of showing love that only made sense in their world. Her memories of his hugs, his laughter, and the banter that was often offensive to most, will stay with her forever.

And despite the tattoos and tough exterior, he had an unwavering love for his mother, Sharon— “La-Lady,” as he called her—He was always the first one to tell anyone he was a mama's boy... Through thick and thin, good and bad, they knew they could count on each other. He will always be her "Simple Man"

Growing up, many knew Steven from his time at the Hudsonville Fairgrounds, running in the demolition derby—a passion he shared with his father. In August 2025, Steven’s nephew Keegan will carry on that tradition by participating in the derby with the car he and Uncle Steve were going to build together this coming summer.

A Celebration of Steven’s Life will be held on Friday, February 7th from  6-9 p.m. at the American Legion Post 47, 3811 West River Dr. NE, Comstock Park. Anyone who knew him, loved him, or simply had the privilege of hearing his sarcastic commentary, is welcome to come pay their respects, gather with family and friends, share stories, and celebrate his legacy. He wouldn't have wanted it any other way, but a party in his honor.

He was never one to sugarcoat anything, but if there’s one thing we can say for sure, it’s that he lived life on his own terms and he made dang sure we all knew it.

Steven’s life will forever be remembered with love and laughter. "Legacy is not leaving something for people, it's leaving something in people."

Please no flowers or plants, he hated stuff like that and would tell you “Don’t waste your money." In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks for your support during this difficult time. A GoFundMe page will be set up to assist with the unexpected expenses resulting from Steven's tragic passing. Any contributions are greatly appreciated and will help ease the burden for his loved ones. The family thanks you for your kindness and support.

You have been gone for 176 days... I don't know how to do the rest of life without you. We ALL miss you, Steven... There is a hole in our hearts, my light has dimmed, and there's an emptiness in the world... So many things just don't seem right.

Steven, I will always remember you as the handsome young ring bearer in my wedding in 1990. You grew into an amazing young man since then. I wish I could be there today to hug your mama and sister, but Influenza A is keeping me away. My love and prayers for your family. Kim

It doesn't even feel real... I just want to wake up and find out it was all just a nightmare. Call you and you answer... but now I just keep leaving messages and you never call me back.
