Sr. Rosemary Homrich

Homrich, OP, Rosemary (the former Sister M. Veritas) of Grand Rapids (born in Muskegon, MI) died on October 29, 2020. She was 93 years old and a Dominican Sister for 71 years.

After high school Rosemary entered Mercy Central School of Nursing, earning an R.N. Soon thereafter she entered the Dominican Sisters at Marywood. She earned a B.S. in nursing from Nazareth College in Kalamazoo. Sister Rosemary became certified as a nurse-midwife and also earned an M.A. in Religion from Incarnate Word College, San Antonio, Texas.

Sr. Rosemary served as an RN, Administrator and Nurse-Midwife, in various hospitals in New Mexico, California, Mississippi, Michigan and Chimbote, Peru. She was a stalwart support for mothers giving birth in sometimes very poor and austere conditions. She found great joy in this work and remarked that the miracle of birth never ceased to amaze her. It was, she said, “a miracle every time!”

As the end of her life drew near and memory began to fade, Sr. Rosemary was ready, willing, and able to assist, to visit, to pray with and for anyone in need. Surely, she was welcomed into Paradise by her dear brother, Rev. Eugene Homrich, CSC, with whom she shared a missionary’s heart and who predeceased her by just three months. Both now rest from their labors in God’s mercy and love.

Sister Rosemary Homrich is survived by her sister, Pat Homrich of Fort Wayne, IN; her sister-in-law Barb Homrich of Defiance, OH; nieces, nephews; many friends and members of her Dominican Community.

In an effort to protect our vulnerable population from the Covid-19 virus a private Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Dominican Chapel/Marywood on Tuesday, November 3.

Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials in Sister Rosemary Homrich’s name may be made to the Grand Rapids Dominican Sisters.
