Sr. Nowak

Nowak, OP, Sister Carol Ann of Grand Rapids (born Caroline Nowak in Melville, Saskatchewan, Canada) died on January 19, 2018. She was 94 years old and a Dominican Sister for 70 years. Sr. Carol Ann earned a bachelor's degree in education from Aquinas College and a Master's in Religious Education from the Aquinas Institute of Religious Studies. Other certifications included a teaching certificate from the state of Michigan, and one in Library Science from Western Michigan University. Sr. Carol Ann taught in the early grades at St. Mary School, Carson City; St. Rita and St. Josaphat, Saginaw; Our Lady of Grace, Dearborn Heights; St. Stephen and Immaculate Heart of Mary, Grand Rapids; St. Alfred, Taylor; Sacred Heart, Muskegon Heights; St. Mary, Lake Leelanau; St. John, Essexville; St. Francis, Traverse City; Holy Cross, Santa Cruz; Our Lady of Belen, Belen; Our Lady of Fatima, Albuquerque; St. Francis, Ranchos de Taos; and St. Anthony, Peñasco. She served as school librarian at Holy Rosary Academy, Bay City; Holy Cross School, Santa Cruz; Our Lady of Fatima, Albuquerque and later, in the congregation's library and as Archives Assistant at Marywood. Sister Carol Ann was a quiet and efficient worker and always gracious. She enjoyed attending concerts and singing in choirs. She spent many autumn afternoons crocheting and watching football - cheering for either the Lions or Notre Dame. Attending Grand Rapids Griffins hockey games with her nephew Jack was also a special pleasure and she cheered for the Detroit Red Wings, unless the Toronto Maple Leafs were playing - of course! She was proud of her Canadian heritage. She will be greatly missed by family and friends alike. Sr. Carol Ann is survived by nieces, nephews, many friends, and members of her Dominican Sisters~Grand Rapids Community. Sister Carol Ann will repose at Dominican Chapel/Marywood, 2025 Fulton Street East, with visitation on Sunday, January 21 from 4:00-7:00 pm, followed by a Remembering Service at 7:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Monday, January 22 at Dominican Chapel/Marywood. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials in Sister Carol Ann Nowak's name may be made to the Grand Rapids Dominican Sisters Health Care Fund.
