Sister Lopez

Lopez, OP, Sister Phyllis of Grand Rapids (born in San Marcos, Texas) died October 20, 2018. She was 85 years old and a Dominican Sister for 64 years. Sister Phyllis earned a B.S. degree and Catechetical Certificate from Aquinas College and attended numerous workshops and institutes. Sister Phyllis assisted in primary grades at St. Anthony, Fisherville and as teacher aide at St. Joseph, Saginaw. She began parish ministry at St. Joseph the Worker, Grand Rapids. Pastoral ministry proved to be Sister Phyllis's forte. She served in Hispanic Pastoral Ministry at Guadalupe Chapel & Center, Bay City; coordinator of Senior Citizens Programs at Holy Ghost Parish, Albuquerque, NM; and Evangelization/RCIA Assistant for St. Joseph Parish, Saginaw. After retiring she lived at Marywood and was an outreach volunteer at St. Joseph the Worker. Sr. Phyllis is survived by her sisters Sister Ellen Mary Lopez, Grand Rapids; Adella Diaz, Waukegan, IL; Rose Lopez and Alice Lopez, Saginaw; and her brother Joe (Mary Alice) Lopez, Bay City, MI; nieces and nephews; many friends and members of her Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids Community. Sister Phyllis will repose at Dominican Chapel/Marywood, 2025 Fulton Street East, with visitation on Tuesday, October 23 from 6:00-7:00 pm, followed by a Remembering Service at 7:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Wednesday, October 24 at Dominican Chapel/Marywood. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials in Sister Phyllis Lopez's name may be made to the Grand Rapids Dominican Sisters Health Care Fund.
