Sister Kirt

Kirt, OP, Sister Judith (formerly known as Sister Dennis Marie) of Grand Rapids (born in Lake Leelanau, MI) died on April 8, 2018. She was 79 years old and a Dominican Sister for 61 years. Sister Judith received a B.S. degree from Aquinas College with a major in Biology. Sister Judith served as a high school teacher and in some instances as principal at SS. Peter & Paul, Saginaw; Sacred Heart, Mt. Pleasant; Beaver Island; St. Francis, Traverse City; Muskegon Catholic Central; and St. Michael, Brunswick. She was a dedicated teacher and earned the name "Sister Fix-it." Sister Judith became a certified histology technician during her seven summers of working in the lab at St. Mary's Hospital, Saginaw. Through a mail-order course she became a certified locksmith. She also received training in podiatry. Sr. Judith enjoyed wood-working, photography, gardening, jigsaw puzzles, and her long-time favorites, fishing and hunting. She was close to the Earth and utilized Earth's resources and reveled in the beauty of God's creation with gratitude. Sister Judith is survived by her sister Patricia (Patrick) Gardner and her brother Michael (Barb) Kirt of Lake Leelanau, MI and her sister Rebecca "Becky" Kirt of Hay Market, VA; nieces, nephews, many friends, and members of her Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids Community. Sister Judith will repose at Chapel of the Word, Marywood Health Center, 111 Lakeside Dr. NE, with visitation on Wednesday, April 11 from 4:00-7:00 pm, followed by a Remembering Service at 7:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Thursday, April 12 at Chapel of the Word, Marywood Health Center. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials in Sister Judith Kirt's name may be made to the Grand Rapids Dominican Sisters Health Care Fund.
