Sidney Helmus

Sidney Fred Helmus, age 84, of Grand Rapids, met his Lord and Savior on Monday, February 19, 2024.

He was a kind and gentle spirit that everyone loved to be around. Known for his sharp memory and attention to detail, one could always rely on Sid to recount the smallest details of the past with remarkable accuracy. Sid and Sonja were married for 43 years, after joining two families together. They enjoyed traveling together over the years, especially spending their winters in Florida.

Sid was preceded in death by his first wife, Bonnie (Stevens) Helmus; his parents, Fred and Rena Helmus; and his children, Craig Helmus, Michael Werkema, and Curtis Helmus.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Sonja (Werkema) Helmus; daughter, Michelle (Dylan) Ferguson; and daughter-in-law, Cynthia (Dane) Olson. He will also be dearly missed by his nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4646 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, Kentwood, with Rev. Paul DeVries officiating. Relatives and friends may meet the family on Tuesday from 1:00-2:00 pm at the funeral home prior to the service. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
