August 27, 2023

Sheryl Ann (nee VanLoon) Coger, age 72, of Grand Rapids, passed away with family by her side on Sunday, August 27, 2023, after a hard-fought battle against glioblastoma. Sheryl was preceded in death by her father, John VanLoon. She will be dearly missed by her devoted husband of 42 years, Michael Coger; her adoring mother, Rosemary VanLoon; siblings-in-law, Cheryl and Marvin DeVries; nieces and nephews, Stacia DeVries, Janelle and David Tahtinen, Meredith and Kirk Manchip; great-nephew Reid Manchip, and many cousins.

Sheryl was an advocate for creativity and sustaining a strong sense of self. She was passionate about gardening and crafting; she gave back to the world with all her beautiful creations. Sheryl was a fervent fan of the Detroit Tigers and a constant cheerleader for the Hoops and Rampage back in the day. Her favorite player was her husband, Mike, and Sheryl’s rallying whistle at his vintage baseball and softball games will be remembered by many friends with fondness. Sheryl cherished touring the world with Mike and was able to experience more than a dozen countries. Mike, Sheryl, and Rose were avid geocachers, making multitudes of memories and friendships on their continent-wide hunts. When she wasn’t out adventuring, Sheryl favored a good beer and great conversation at a unique brewery. Sheryl always had a knack for finding the hidden gems in life.

We will all miss the passion she shared, along with the love she expressed in such a myriad of endearing ways. Sheryl imprinted on our hearts and this earth, leaving a beauty behind to last forever.

Mike and Rose would like to personally express deep gratitude and appreciation to Sheryl’s cousin, Ross Rockwell, for his generous help and priceless support during the past months of struggle.

Sheryl and her mother Rose were always a delight to chat with while they shopped at Knapp Corner Meijer. We became friends sharing photos of my girls who were away at collage. RIP Sheryl....I will miss you.

Sheryl was one of the best neighbors you could ever ask for! I remember moving in and she and Mike were the first ones to come over and introduce themselves and even brought us a welcome gift. I won’t forget that. More importantly, I think she loved our dogs almost as much as we do! Our oldest dog, Teddy would literally sit on the deck just hoping she would be out in her garden and she would stop what she was doing to come and greet him and Ollie and give them treats and pets. I will cherish the fond memories I have of looking out the window and seeing her on the other side of the fence down at their level talking to them. I’ll also miss our conversations over the fence. Sheryl will be greatly missed!

There are many memories and moments that I can think of when it comes to Sheryl, but there is one defining one that stands out to me. Over the last 17 years that I have known Sheryl since I started dating Meredith and eventually became part of their family, she and Mike were not "kid people". They never had children of their own, but they always treated Stacia, Janelle, Meredith, and eventually David and myself as their "kids". That is how they referred to us when talking to their friends about us, like, we are going to a brewery with the "kids", or we are going to visit the "kids". There has been no better example of this than after they found out that we were going to have Reid. Sheryl had always been crafty with making jewelry and creating her garden, but after we told them that their "kids" were having a kid of their own, she took her crafty-ness to a new level. Without us knowing, she learned how to quilt to make Reid the most incredible blanket. The amount of time and effort this project took shows how much she loved her family. There is no amount of words I could use to express how much that meant to us and how perfect of a gift that was for Reid. During the time Sheryl gave this wonderful quilt to us we found ourselves in a tight spot because Meredith had to return to work, I didn't have any time off, and we had to cover a week gap before Reid started daycare. Neither of our parents were able to come out to watch Reid during that time but Sheryl and Mike stepped in to help us. They drove the 700 miles to Virginia to help us. They arrived a few days before Reid would be without Meredith or myself around and had a crash course on feeding, diaper changes and everything else a newborn required. During the week it was amazing to get home from work and see Sheryl holding Reid while he played with his crinkle book or just taking a nap. There were many days when I got home and Reid was sleeping in Sheryl's arms and she didn't want to get up or move because she didn't want to wake him up. Seeing someone who was not a "kid" person completely change into someone that would do anything to help our kid showed the type of person Sheryl was. She would do anything for the people she loved without hesitation and there is no way that words can express what she meant to everyone who was in her life. Life will never be the same without her, but I know she will never be forgotten, and we will make sure Reid knows how much his first babysitter loved him.
