Samariz Hernandez-Cruz

Samariz Hernandez-Cruz, age 37, of Grand Rapids, passed away and went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, November 8, 2017. With an infectious smile that could light up the room, Samariz loved unconditionally and was a blessing to all she encountered. She worked as a community school coordinator for the Kent School Services Network. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Zoe Simone Cruz; husband, David Emelander; mother, Maria and Jesus Delgado-Cruz; father, Francisco Velazquez; brothers, Francisco and Brady Velazquez, Frankie and Jamie Velazquez; sister, Mariely Velazquez; grandmother, Rosalia Ramos. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at St. Joseph the Worker, 3138 Birchwood SW, Wyoming, with Fr. Steven Cron Celebrant. Interment Resurrection Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family Monday from 3-8 p.m. and also on Tuesday from 9-10 a.m. at Matthysse-Kuiper-DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville), 4145 Chicago Drive.

I met Sami at a Grand Rapids School Board function, one at LINC and another one at Cesar Chavez School. I was so impressed with her dedication to the school and the children. She was open and welcoming and a true asset to Grand Rapids Public Schools. She made such a Wonderfull impression on me so I know how much she will be missed by so many. May God rest her soul.

Sami was such a beautiful person and a true friend. We could talk about anything and everything, she was always there when I needed her.
