Sam Bolt

March 27, 1948 ~
August 10, 2023

Sam Bolt, of Wyoming, went to his heavenly home on Thursday, August 10, 2023, at the age of 75. He was a warrior in a 15-year battle with metastatic prostate cancer. “Well done, faithful servant…come and share your Master’s happiness.” Matthew 25:23. Sam was a 1966 graduate of Grand Rapids Central Christian High School. He enlisted in the Air Force after graduation and was stationed at McQuire AFB in New Jersey until 1971. He was employed at Chicago Dr. Schwinn (now West Michigan Cyclery and Fitness) for 23 years, and as a financial planner with Gunn, Kol, and Bolt until his retirement in 2015. In retirement, he enjoyed working part-time at Ivanrest Hardware. He served as a paid on-call firefighter from 1981-1998 and received the Firefighter of the Year award in 1997. Sam had a passion for service and was elected as Councilman-at-Large for the City of Wyoming from 2005 until 2022. He also served as Mayor-Pro-Tem from 2007-2022. As a city councilman, he served faithfully on various committees and boards for the city. He served as past president of Grandville Calvin Christian School Education Foundation, and also Family Network of Wyoming. Sam also served for many years as a deacon and an elder at Lee St. CRC and was a faithful member at Faith Community CRC. He enjoyed volunteering on various mission trips, painting and remodeling in Cary and Rolling Fork, Mississippi and in Gray, Kentucky. His greatest pleasure was watching his grandchildren in their sporting activities; cheering them on by shouting out their nicknames for all to hear. He and his wife, Marcia, enjoyed several memorable road trips to Alaska, a road trip to Nova Scotia, countless trips out west, and recently camping in the state of Michigan. Above all, he was a child of God and placed his trust in his Creator. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 51 years, Marcia (Brinks); children, Michelle Hofstee, Michael and Gayle Bolt, Mary and Ryan Henderson; grandchildren: Jacob, Sam, and Anna Hofstee, Austin, and Carson Bolt, Aiden, Katie, Grant, and Steven Henderson; brother and sisters: Beth Ashendorf, Jim and Connie Bolt, Ruth and Brian Hiemstra; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Marvin and Wilma Ilbrink, Carlyne Brinks, Esther and Herm Scholtens; many special nieces, nephews, and cousins. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Gladys Bolt; brothers-in-law, Sam Ashendorf, and Gordon Brinks; and sister-in-law, Nelvina Ilbrink. The Bolt family wishes to express their thanks to Faith Hospice for their compassionate care. Special thanks to his Faith Hospice community care team: Kathy, Angela, Beth, and Kristina, and the nursing staff at Trillium Woods. Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Thursday, August 17, 2023, at Faith Community Christian Reformed Church, 5250 Byron Center Ave. SW, Wyoming with Rev. Roger Groenboom officiating. The service will be available via livestream at faithcommunitycrc.org. Burial will take place at Georgetown Township Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family Wednesday, August 16 from 2-4 and 5-8 pm at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW. An additional hour of visitation will be held at the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Christian Reformed Conference Grounds, 11253 Lakeshore Dr. Grand Haven, MI 49417, a place very special to the family.
