Remembering Ruth Sylvia Ubels

Ruth Ubels, age 75, of Grand Rapids, passed away peacefully after a four year battle with cancer on Saturday, July 25, 2026. Ruth was a very independent woman who loved spending time outdoors and learning about nature. She dedicated her career to teaching, serving as a science and outdoor education teacher with Grand Rapids Public Schools. Ruth loved working with children and sharing her passion for the natural world with them. She also adored her dogs, especially her beloved Golden Retrievers, who were lifelong companions. She would often bring them to school to introduce them to her fourth-grade students.

Ruth's love of nature also led her to volunteer with kangaroo research in Australia for two summers, where she made wonderful memories and formed lasting friendships. She also enjoyed her summers as a naturalist at Camp Roger, an experience she treasured. Ruth was happiest enjoying the comforts of home and walking her dog and enjoying her neighbors, though she also cherished the occasional opportunity to travel and make memories with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Engbert and Edith Ubels; step-father, Hero Bratt; brother, Ed Ubels; brother-in-law, Bill Kuipers.

She will be lovingly remembered by her siblings, Larry and Char Bratt, Joanie Crockett and Dan Byrne, Marie  Kuipers, Grace and Bob VanTimmeren, Esther and Dale Kuiper, Jennifer and Jack Waterway; sister in law, Ginny Ubels; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held privately at a later date. Burial will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Camp Roger.

Dear Ruth’s family, I was a neighbor of Ruth’s in Grand Rapids when I was a child. She helped teach me the importance of dogs, properly caring for dogs, education/teaching, nature, animals/birds, independence, et cetera. I have many fond memories of Ruth and her dogs Ruben and Rufas. May God welcome her home. I will miss her.

Dear Esther and Family, I was honored to be Ruth’s colleague during our 6 years together in GRPS Outdoor Education Department. Her passion for the environment coupled with her dedication to the education of all students was remarkable. She touched thousands of young lives and build the capacity of our department staff to meet the diverse needs of students. Her laugh always brought a smile to our faces. Sincerely and With Great Respect, Mike Paskewiczt

Ms Ubels was my sons teacher for two years. She realized his adhd before we did and even gave him a separate desk so he could walk from one to another. I’ll never forget the kindness she conveyed towards Sebastian. She truly was an icon and will be missed. Prayers for her family during this time.
