Ruth Kuyl

VANDER KUYL - Mrs. Ruth Vander Kuyl aged 96, former resident of Comstock Park, passed away Saturday, January 15, 2011. Mrs. Vander Kuyl was preceded in death by her husband, John; parents, John and Martha Spoelstra and her brother, Carroll Spoelstra. She is survived by her children, Marcia Vander Kuyl, Dennis (Barbara) Vander Kuyl, Laureen (James) Evans; grandchildren, Barbara DeVries-Woodson, Robert DeVries, Sally (Michael) Trotochaud, Susan deVries, LeAnne (Dean) DeGood, Lisa (Brian) Lindhout, Kate Evans, Carrie (Neil)Johnson; nine great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Mildred Cunningham. Ruth spent her childhood on the west side of Grand Rapids, attending Harrison Park grade school and graduated from Union High School in 1932. She was engaged to her husband on Thanksgiving day in 1935, worked in a dime store, earning $16.00 a week. She was widowed at age 40. She was a member of Central Reformed church, she was very active there serving on many committees and ladies circles, she also enjoyed needlework, traveling and reading. Ruth worked for the Grand Rapids Public Schools where she retired from in 1978, after retiring at age 64 she enjoyed traveling in the U.S., Europe, Scandinavia and Mexico. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at the Stegenga Funeral Chapel, 1601 Post Dr. NE with Rev. Tim Dieffenbach officiating. Interment Rosedale Memorial Park. The family will greet relatives and friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the funeral service. Memorial contributions may be made to National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
