Family owned and operated for over 85 years.
Ruth Elaine Yff Kamps, age 88 (Grand Rapids MI), beloved child of God, left this world on April 26, 2024, to live eternally with her Maker. Ruth was the second child of George and Nelle Yff, and sibling to Joanne Lewis (Bill dec); Nelle Evenhouse (Bill); George Yff (dec); Sarah Bishop (Doug dec, Bud); Esther Yff-Prins (Bill dec, Bob dec); Judith Gleason (Dick dec); and Laura Kofsky (Rick). Ruth grew up in Rehoboth NM, and later lived and worked in New Mexico in her adult years. New Mexico was always home to her, though she also lived in New Jersey, Montana, and Michigan. Ruth is survived by her husband of 71 years, Gordon Kamps, and by her dearly loved children: Jeffrey Kamps (Samantha); Michael Kamps (Marilyn); Timothy Kamps (Kristyn); and Lorilyn Wiering (Vernon). She was greatly loved by her grandchildren: Joseph Kamps, Annie Kamps (dec), Jonathan Kamps (Kim), Matthew Kamps (Kara), Mary Kamps Mirdes (Alex); Michelle Kamps Gumerus (James); Jessica Kamps; Jaclyn Kamps (Sam); Madeleine Wiering (James); Basil Wiering; and Reuben Wiering. She was Great Grandmother to Abigail Kamps; Sebastian and Oliver Kamps; Harrison Mirdes; Mercedes and Constantine Gumerus; Will and Harper Long; and Evelyn Kamps. Ruth’s caring service to the world included being a loving wife and mother, and a wonderfully efficient homemaker with an open and hospitable heart. She welcomed many to her home, and volunteered in many areas, and was dedicated to serving others wherever she lived: at Rehoboth as coordinator for Elderhostel; at Zuni as a teacher’s assistant; and in her later years, as a tireless worker at Family Assistance of Calvin CRC. She also served with Gord transporting seniors to outings and activities for Samaritan’s Carriage. She and Gordon traveled throughout the U.S. and internationally, spending an entire year in Port Said, Egypt. She was a voracious reader and loved to talk about the last book she had read, especially historical novels and Tony Hillerman mysteries. She counted among her dearest friends Jim and Ruth Sikkema and Roger and Sue Bratt. The couples shared many meals together, traveled together, and supported each other for many years. In her final years, Ruth struggled with dementia, but never lost her good cheer. She and Gordon lived quietly at Holland Home Estates. Ruth will be deeply missed by all who loved her. A memorial service will be held at the Raybrook Chapel of Holland Home on May 25, 2024, at 3:30 pm. Memorial contributions in Ruth’s honor may be made to Zuni Christian Mission School, Family Assistance of Calvin CRC or Faith Hospice - Trillium Woods.
