Roger Lucas

December 31, 1953 ~
October 21, 2021

Roger Lucas, age 67, of Grandville, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, October 21, 2021, and was called home to be with Jesus. To some, he’s just a guy who built a castle. To others, he may be no one at all. To a wife, he made dreams come true and to his five children, he hung the moon. But to everyone who truly knew Roger, they knew that he was someone very special… He could always make the impossible happen. I would have dared you to tell him that it can’t be done, because he’d flat out tell you… you’re wrong. Roger and his legacy will always be remembered, cherished and loved by so many. One of the things that we loved most about Roger was behind that tough facade, watching his face light up when his “dear” Mary walked into the room. He was the true definition of a God-fearing man; a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Roger will be missed by not only me, and maybe you, but he will be missed by so many who will continue to watch all of his dreams come true. He will be missed by an enormous community and so many who have been blessed enough to call him a mentor or friend. Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers as we mourn the unexpected loss of his presence here on this earth and celebrate his welcoming into the arms of our Lord. A funeral service celebrating the life of Roger will be at Chapel Pointe Church, 3350 Baldwin St., Hudsonville, with Rev. Joel Wayne officiating, on Saturday, October 30, 2021, at 11 a.m. with a luncheon to follow. Family and friends are invited to meet the family at Chapel Pointe Church on Friday, October 29, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to World Mission. Roger will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Mary Lucas; children: Jenny and Mike Kemp, Katy Lucas and fiancé, Austin Groot, Hope and Lincoln Young, Jake Lucas, Steve Lucas; three adorable grandchildren; siblings: Mary Lucas, Marlene and Scott Lehnert, Patsy Lucas, Jessica and Jonah Caijgas, Bill Schnabel, Ben Deihl; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Terri Land and Dan Hibma, Sandy and Mark Strandberg, Kathy and John Desser; many wonderful nieces and nephews whom he loved. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Jake and Esther Lucas; brother, Stephen Lucas.

My heart is heavy for the Lucas family and the body of Christ at large with the news of Roger's sudden "home going". Like many, we were very blessed by Roger and Mary in huge ways. His "can do" attitude especially in the face of situations that seemed insurmountable was infectious and made a lasting impression on me. He was full of ideas, integrity, infectious optimism and a wealth of creative ideas. I remember the first time my family was at their home and my girls accompanied by the Lucas kids, discovered the "secret passages" throughout their home. It was and still remains, magical, in my minds eye. I am grateful for the gift that God shared with the world in Roger. My heart, prayers and thoughts will long be with the Lucas family in walking through this valley and the forthcoming years without him. I only wish we were in Michigan to be at his service to give tribute to his life and legacy. -Jen Praniewicz-

As "lake neighbors" of Roger and Mary, we are saddened by Roger's passing. We will forever remember how he seamlessly provided parking and across-the-lake transportaation for wedding guests - an initiative that turned into an memorable event for all of us in the cove! Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers are with Mary and the family. Brian and Carol Gray

Its been a pleasure to work for Rog Lucas. I know that he loved his family and God very much. I will miss watching him work in the back behind my window with his boys. I got to ride in the fire truck with him once with my grandson at a 4th of July parade. Great fun! Keeping the family in our prayers. - The Sayles Family

Roger was larger than life, always filled with dreams, aspiring all those around him, including his children. There is comfort in knowing he humbled himself before our Lord, and is celebrating with Him even now. He will be deeply missed by us all.

I always admired his hardwork ethic and his tenacity to do things even when people said it couldn't be done. At the same time, he was humble and always willing to jump in and work along side us to get the job done. It has been a privilege to have work for him. He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with you and your family.
