Richard Kreuger

November 3, 1948 ~
May 7, 2026

Richard Allen Kreuger, age 77, of Hudsonville, went to be with his Lord and Savior surrounded by friends and family on Thursday, May 7, 2026. Rick loved his family deeply and cherished the time and memories they shared together. He especially adored his grandchildren and found great joy in spending time with them, creating lasting memories they will forever treasure. Rick was very proud that the two oldest grandsons are serving in the US Navy and US Airforce. He enjoyed golfing with friends, but baseball was a lifelong passion. Rick spent several years as a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox before finishing his career with the Cleveland Indians. Through his talent and love for the game, he not only taught baseball, but also shared his faith and mentored countless young men both on and off the field. Discipling others was one of Rick’s greatest passions, and he faithfully served through prison ministries and men’s Bible studies.

Rick also loved the outdoors and lived an active lifestyle. He was passionate about healthy living and often encouraged others to make healthy choices. Known for his sense of humor, Rick loved telling stories, joking with those around him, and making his family laugh. He also enjoyed playing games, especially his favorite card games, Euchre and Hearts.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Leona Kreuger; parents-in-law, Dick and Lorraine Doyle; and sister, Janet Kreuger. Rick will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 37 years, Brenda (Doyle); children, Sarah and Jordan Dykstra, Hannah and Leo Lach, Joseph Kreuger; grandchildren, Gavin Lach, Tyler Lach, Evelyn Lach, Wyatt Lach; brother, Tom Kreuger; sister, Barb Kreuger; sisters-in-laws, Deb and Ed Lehmann, Sherri Katerburg, Linda and Ross Johnson; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW with Pastor Brian Mitchell officiating. Burial will take place at Georgetown Township Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with the family Monday, May 11 from 5-8 pm at the funeral home and on Tuesday from 10-10:45 am prior to the service. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Pregnancy Resource Center

I too was a fraternity brother of Rick. We shared a few apartments and many laughs. Rick once asked me to catch for him, so that he could get in shape. Since I had caught in Little League, I said SURE! Those pitches came in so fast and with such movement, that episode did not last long. The stories of bullpen hijinks were very entertaining. He will be missed. My sincere condolences to Brenda and the rest of the family.

Rick and I were fraternity brothers and roommates at Michigan State. We shared many high times, and also impassioned discussions about spiritual beliefs, and although we were at opposite ends it never came between us. To say that Rick liked to joke and had a sense of humor is an understatement. He was a prankster, and we were involved in all manner of hijinks that kept us laughing. We were part of a close knit group, that no matter the time, distance and scant communication that separated us, when we would come together over the years, we would pick up right where we left off like nothing happened in the interim that could break the bond we had. I was never much for baseball, but still Rick was a “star” to me, and he shined bright beyond his athletic talent. I traveled to Boston to spend time with him at Fenway, visiting other players and walking the Commons together. I will miss you in this world brother, but keep them laughing until it’s my time. To Brenda and family, I know this is a huge loss for you all. To fill the space he occupied in your lives is an impossible task. But the memories abound, and they abide, and I trust that over time they will give you comfort. Bob Newcombe Dolores, Colorado

I will miss Rick and his conversations. He left us in sorrow, but we will meet again as I. Sure he was met by Christ who said: “Well done my good and faithful servant.”
