Rev. Garrett H. Stoutmeyer, born in Kalamazoo, MI, on December 31, 1932, went to be with the Lord on January 5, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents, Garrett and Margaret Stoutmeyer; sister, Paula Dobson; and his in-laws, Gilbert and Rose Bussies; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Vander Hulst.
Garrett graduated from Kalamazoo Christian High School, attended Western Michigan University, and Westminster Seminary-Philadelphia, PA; his greatest academic joy was to graduate from Calvin College where he received his BD and Master of Divinity degrees. Ordained in 1958, it was his privilege to serve CRC churches in New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois and Florida. While in Holland, MI, he was the daily radio minister of “At the Master’s Feet”. Delegated to Synod several times, he served as a Synodical Deputy, Classical Clerk of several Classis, Board of Calvin College Trustees, and the Board of World Missions. He was awarded a Clinical Pastoral Education degree from MacNeal Memorial Hospital in Berwyn, IL. Following retirement in 1997, together with Barbara, they founded the non-denominational Central Chapel and Lake Alfred Ministry in Haines City, FL, and he preached there for 17 consecutive winters. He is remembered for his gift of memorization and oration; his great joy was bringing God’s word and he expressed gratitude for living his passion of preaching, teaching, and counseling.
He is survived by his loving and supportive wife of 66 years, Barbara; his children, Cynthia Volkers, Carolyn (Dr. Justin) Wilson, Daniel (Lisa) Stoutmeyer; 10 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. A private family celebration of life service has taken place with the burial at Graafschaap Cemetery in Holland. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts to LaGrave Christian Reformed Church or World Renew.
