Retha Theeuwes Doane

Retha Theeuwes Doane, of Belmont, peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, February 24, 2023 at 100 years old. She was preceded in death by her parents, Asa and Alta Chase; first husband, Victor Theeuwes; second husband, Wallace Doane; daughter, Victoria Schreur; son, Jack Theeuwes; grandchildren: Rick Tanner, Steven Lusk, Brian Lusk, Theodore Schwartz, Paul Theeuwes, Mary Theeuwes. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Bonnie Lusk; children-in-law, Roger (Marilyn) Doane, Aleen (James) Dodds, Tamara Wampole, Ron Schreur; grandchildren: William Tanner, Cheryl Bush, James Schreur, Lisa Rockwell, Timothy Theeuwes, Karen Vander Wagon, Robert Nielsen; 17 great-grandchildren: 12 great-great-grandchildren. After Retha’s children were grown, she went back to school, receiving an associate’s degree from Grand Rapids Junior College, and both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Western Michigan University. She went on to teach early elementary grades in the Grand Rapids Public School system for many years. After her retirement, Retha continued to teach through private tutoring, and for several years she enjoyed volunteering her time to knit hats for the Angel Tree services. She was a talented seamstress, organist, an avid reader and had a passion for genealogy. Retha’s faith was important to her; she was a member of West Cannon Baptist Church. She will be greatly missed for her fun personality, generosity towards others and love for her family. Funeral services will be held at 12 pm on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at West Cannon Baptist Church, 5760 Cannonsburg Rd. NE, Belmont, MI 49306, with Pastor Tim Anderson officiating. Service will be livestreamed on their website at www.westcannon.org. Burial will take place at Plainfield Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family for an hour prior to the service at church. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to Faith Hospice.
