Phyllis (Huizinga) VanderSloot, age 75, of Byron Center, passed peacefully and was called home on Wednesday, September 8, 2021. She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter-in-law, and two siblings. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 56 years, Roger; her children, Sheila and Jim McElroy, Lee Vander Sloot and Terry Garlets, David Vander Sloot; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren with one soon to arrive; and two siblings. Phyllis was a bus driver for Grand Rapids Public Schools retiring after 25 years of dedicated service. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 13, 2021, 11 am at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW with Rev. Harry Koops officiating. Burial Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Relatives and friends may meet the family Sunday from 2-5 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be given to Wyoming Family Network, where Phyllis volunteered for many years.

What a blessing that we were connected in the Netherlands with the stream to join the service in memory of Phyllis. It was clear that Phyllis had Dutch roots and we were able to see her over here. The service helped us to cope with the sadness of her sudden death. We have great memories and remember her as a woman with a great sense of humor and above all as a loving caring woman. We never forget her care and support needed to bring her mother in law and our tante Mies back home from the Netherlands when she was diagnosed being very ill. Our thoughts are with Roger and his family going through deep grief.We were impressed by the service and the Southern Songs and be sure that we have a great God to guide us. Dear Roger and Family, Words cannot even express our deepest sympathies for the loss of your wife, mother and grandmother. Phyliis was an amazing women who touched many many many lives with her love and her gift of giving. Her smile was contageous and you couldn't help but be happy around her. She was definitely God's gift to us. My inlaw's knew her as the "cookie lady" and they always looked forward to Roger and Phyllis's visits. I drove bus with Phyllis for many years ! Everyone loved her happy , jolly disposition ! She teased me about having my first child on her birthday , so I did ! ( Baby wasn’t due for another 5 weeks ) She will be missed here on earth , but heaven is in for a real treat ! RIP , my friend .
