Paul J. Gulick

March 19, 2022

In childhood PJ was a joy. He was intelligent, caring, and loving. In elementary school he laughed and smiled with a beautiful, beaming smile on his face throughout the day. As he grew into middle school his love of Boy Scouts (he became an Eagle Scout) and soccer kept him surrounded by many friends. The start of high school continued on the same path with his family and friends watching him grow into a wonderful young man.
PJ’s high school years proved to be more challenging for him with teen pressures of experimenting with the use of marijuana and alcohol. It was this time when his life began to change. He managed to make it into college, but soon discovered even more avenues of self-destruction.
It was only in recent years that he was diagnosed with Bipolar Disease, but by that time the drug and alcohol addiction had a tight grip on his mind and body. Addiction is cruel, and mental illness is cruel. The combination is beyond cruel to the point of unbearable.
PJ fought to become sober for many years, but he lost that battle on March 19th, 2022. He is survived by his father (Mark Gulick), mother (Debra Gulick), brother (Erik Gulick), sister-in-law (Bree Gulick), grandmother (Joe Gulick) and many Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins. In these later years, his friends had dwindled and time spent with family was difficult for him.
In spite of this, we remember our joyful son who was a loving and caring person. Join us in celebrating his life and sharing any stories of PJ that make you smile. Photos are also welcome on his mother’s Facebook (Debra Schram Gulick).
We will be having a celebration of life picnic to honor PJ on July 16th from 1- 4 pm. Please contact us through Facebook for location and directions.
If you are interested in Donation in PJ’s name, please consider your local addiction centers and shelters.

Oh sweet sweet Paul., I just heard about your passing. I spent many days and nights watching you try to fight alcoholism. The grip it had on you was like nothing I have ever seen. Alcoholism took everything you loved from you. It stole all your youth! The world will never see the guy you truly were. I was lucky enough to see glimpses of it but not enough. You were naturally so accepting of everyone's own path in life. You looked down on no one! So incredibly intelligent with a willingness to help when you were sober. You operated with such perfectionism in the simplest of tasks. I mean who has a ruler in their Bible? I was trying to think of how many times I took you to the hospital, rehab, network 180, mental health appointments. You really opened my eyes to a system that is so terribly broken and the seriousness of addiction and what it steals from you and everyone around you. Despite all the addict behavior, you were so sweet at heart. Animals could sense that about you. My dog would curl up right next to you in ways he never has us. You spent a short lifetime in darkness and pain. You can now finally rest in the arms of Jesus, a savior you knew personally. I am sad but also thankful you don't have to hurt any longer. You will be missed!

Paul was my “Big Brother” at Teen challenge. He was the one who showed me around and got me acquainted when I first got there. Slept next to him for a year. Him and I went toe to toe on the soccer field all summer long that year. Those games brought him such joy. And he was hands down the best, skill wise out of the group.I can see the smile now.I also had the pleasure of traveling to different churches to sing and share our testimonies. I can think multiple occasions where young men who were touched by his story approached him afterwards to pick his brain about his battle. Paul may have left us too early. But I know he touched a lot of lives.. God still used him and will continue to do so. Thoughts and prayers❤️
