Norman Smith

Norman C. Smith, aged 82, of Comstock Park walked into heaven on Sunday, January 27, 2013 after courageously battling cancer for many years. Norman is survived by the mother of his children and his best friend, Patricia Smith; his children, Pamela (Gary) Bogard, Charles (Laura) Smith, Susan (Alexander) VanHolstyn, Scott Smith; grandchildren, Lisa (Kevin) VanDyke, Derek (Nicole Major) Bogard, Heather Wolffis, Travis Smith, Brad (Annie) Smith, Kelsey (Andrew) Burk, Russell (Kirsten Heitz) VanHolstyn, Corey VanHolstyn, Sarah (Jeremiah) Merriman, Alexandria (Aaron Schmoekel) Lennon; great grandchildren, Brandon and Austin Van Dyke, Cassidy Major, Jadelyn and Carter Burk, Henry Smith, Bailey and Taylor Bogard, Kaleb and Kaylee Wolffis and Kyler Bogard. Also surviving are his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Michael and Barbara Babka and many nieces and nephews. Norman was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Bessie Smith. Norman proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He retired from the City of Grand Rapids after 36 years of service. He was a kindhearted, gracious man who faced his illness with dignity. The most important thing in life was being with his family. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 on Friday, February 1st at the Belmont Baptist Church, 6446 Belmont Ave NE. with Pastor Kurt Kigor officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends from 2-4 and 6-8 pm on Thursday, January 31st at Stegenga Funeral Chapel, 1601 Post Dr. NE. and one hour prior to the service at the church. Military Honors will be presented by the Kent County Veterans Honor Guard. Private interment will be in Plainfield Twp. Cemetery.
