Remembering Norman Schut

Norman “Norm” Schut, age 84, of Jenison, Michigan, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on August 23, 2026.

Born on October 26, 1941, Norm was the third child of Lambert and Henrietta Schut. From the age of 15 he worked the family farmland alongside his brothers, developing a lifelong love of farming on the land that God had entrusted to his family.

Norm served in the United States Army from 1963 to 1965, stationed in Germany. After his military service he returned home to Jenison and continued working the family farm. In 1985 he began a long career with Hap Hoekwater and Sons, faithfully laboring in the work he knew and loved.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lambert and Henrietta Schut; siblings, Leonard (Mary) Schut, Harley Schut, and Hazel (Carl) Bode; sister-in-law, Betty Schut and brother-in-law, Warren Brouwer. Norm is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Grace; his children, Joleen (Jason) Apol, Jennifer (Scott) Bouwkamp, and Jeff (Bethel) Schut; his grandchildren: Alex Apol, Esther (Andrew) Bronkema, Samuel Apol, David Apol, Rebecca Apol, Tylar Bouwkamp, Matt Bouwkamp (special friend, Olivia Rewa), Louis Schut, Grace (Quint) Leland, Collin, Adrianna, Cole, Lawrence, and Evert Schut; his siblings, Gerri Brouwer, Nan Schut, Jan (Dave) Baar, Louise (Marty) Nivison, Junior (Marie) Schut, Barb (Roger) DeKoekkoek, Bob (Louisa) Schut, and Thea (Craig) Wilhoite; and many nieces and nephews.

A quiet man who spent his life working the same soil where he was born, Norm lived out his faith in daily faithfulness to God, family, and the work set before him. He now rests in the sure hope of the resurrection and the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ, who said, “And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.” (Luke 23:43 NKJV)

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 28, 2026, at Bethel United Reformed Church, 8360 Cottonwood Dr. Jenison with Rev. Steve Postma officiating. I attended Hudsonville High School with Norm. I would meet him at his house in the morning and we would ride our Chushman Eagles to school. I remember topping onions on his father's farm at thet timee.. Norm taught me how to milk a cow, the family had a cow for milk at that time. Norm was a good friend. To the family please accept my sympathy Jim Bolthouse..

My deepest condolences to the Schut and de Koekkoek family on the passing of Norm. Although Norm was a distant relative, I feel a personal connection through our shared family history. It is always difficult to say goodbye to someone who was part of that family story. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. May the many memories of Norm, and the love he shared with those around him, bring comfort in the days ahead. Rest in peace, Norm. You will be remembered with warmth and respect.
