Norma Jean Chapin, age 93, of Grandville, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, January 16, 2023. She was born in Grand Rapids to Ray and Frieda Gilman and graduated from Creston High School. Norma loved to bowl and golf. She was an avid gardener, shopper and loved to go garage-saling. Norma could do anything crafty or involving working with her hands. She loved bingo day at SarahCare, where she was very good at winning. She will be remembered for her Friday trips to the salon, and how she was particular about her hair which was always perfectly permed. Most of all she loved being with her family. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, Richard “Dick”, in 2016, her parents, sisters: Marie Battermann, Margaret “Midge” Creed; brothers: Don Gilman, Jerry Gilman and Roy Gilman. Left to treasure her memory are, Rick and Vicki, Kim, Sandy and Bill; grandchildren, Erik (Stef), Lexi, Nikki (Brad), Jason (Sarah), Rachelle, Phil (Erin); great-grandchildren, Samara, Emily, Kaleb, Payton, Devin, Ollie, NoraJean, Aidan, Avery, Jordan, Mekenzie, Lily, Jennie. The family extends their appreciation for the special care given to Norma by the nurses of Spectrum Health Hospice. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 21 at 2:00 pm at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW. Relatives and friends may meet the family, Saturday from 1-2 pm prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to Spectrum Health Hospice.
