Remembering Nelson Miedema

Nelson Lee Miedema, affectionately known as Nels, Dad, Pappa, Mr. Miedema, Coach, and Uncle Nels, moved to his heavenly home on Saturday, July 25, 2026. Nels loved being surrounded by God’s creation. He spent many summers at Camp Roger and cherished the beauty of the outdoors. He loved being at home with his family, working in his yard, mowing the lawn, and planting flowers. He simply loved to work and was always happiest when he had a project to work on or someone he could help. Nels loved being in the classroom, on the football field, and anywhere he could be surrounded by kids of all ages. He had a special gift for connecting with them, talking with them, and giving many of them nicknames they would never forget. He was a true encourager who made his students and players feel loved, valued, and special. Through his words and actions, Nels had a lasting impact on the lives of countless young people. He also enjoyed remodeling homes, taking on projects, and helping anyone who needed a hand fixing "something." He loved spending time with his many friends, especially when that time was spent together on a golf course. Nels was a true joy to be around. His contagious smile and laughter could brighten any room, and his genuine care for others made everyone feel welcome. His faith was an important part of who he was, and he was grateful for the opportunity to share that faith and help shape the lives of his students and players to know and follow Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Jennie Miedema; siblings; Roger and Marilyn Miedema, Ron Miedema, Mike Miedema; and sister-in-law, Helaine Miedema. Nels will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Karen; daughter, Jenna Robison; grandchildren, Benjamin Miedema, Alexandra Sookram, Dillan Robison, and Devin Robison; siblings: Dale Miedema, Marcia Palmbos Hamming, Bud and Robin Miedema, Randy and Linley Miedema, Ken and Lis Miedema; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mitzi Miedema, Arloa Miedema, Jan DeJong, Jim and Joy Jonker, John and Elaine Jonker, Lani and Dick Von Tersch; many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Friday, July 31, 2026, at Cottonwood Church, 1101 Cypress Dr. Jenison with Pastor Matt Palsrok officiating. Relatives and friends may visit with the family Thursday, July 30 from 4-7 pm at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Camp Roger or Grandville Calvin Christian Schools
