Nelson John Murphy, aka Pat Murphy, age 94, of Rockford, Michigan, passed away peacefully in the early morning on Thursday, July 25, 2024, at Cortland Riverside Gardens in Grand Rapids, MI.
Pat was born in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan to the late Nelson L. and Ellen (Malone) Murphy. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his infant brother, James Murphy; and his sister, Mary (Murphy) Manning.
Pat is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 70 years, Sally (Gilbert) Murphy; children, Leslie Murphy, Patrick (Stephanie) Murphy, Todd (Leigh) Murphy and Lindsey (John) Kirk; 14 grandchildren, Monica, Patrick, Meagan, Mallory, Sydney, Erin (Josh), Taylor, Emily, Ian (Samantha), Sean, Mollie, Chase, Lecia and Madison; as well as 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his beloved sister, Joann (Murphy) Morris of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.
Pat was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, serving during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he worked in construction, at AMI and ultimately retired from Steelcase, after which he and Sally were able to spend time between Ludington, Michigan in the Summer and Florida in the Winter where they enjoyed playing golf. Along with golfing, Pat also enjoyed hunting and fishing but most of all spending time with his family, especially the legendary ‘Murphy Mania’ get-togethers. Pat was a hardworking, kind, sentimental man with an amazing sense of humor and a quick wit. He loved well and was well loved.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Cortland Riverside Gardens and The Care Team Hospice, for the wonderful care you gave our husband, dad, and grandpa, and the kindness and grace you showed all of us.
According to his wishes, cremation has taken place.
