Remembering Nancy Knoper

Nancy Knoper, age 82, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2025.

Born on December 29, 1942, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Nancy was the daughter of Neil and Kathryn Mohr. She grew up on a dairy farm in Allendale and carried her love for the land and rural life throughout her days. Nancy graduated from Allendale Christian School with a ninth-grade education and then pursued beauty school and even took a course in France. Known for her signature extra-short haircuts, whether you wanted it short or not, she shared her talents with friends and family alike. Later in life, she returned to school and proudly earned her GED.

Nancy was a devoted wife to her husband of 62 years, Jay, a loving mother to her son, Bryan Knoper, and daughter, Gwyn (Kenny) Ellens, and a cherished grandma to Audrey Knoper, Jayce Ellens, Kenna Ellens, and Trey Ellens (Jenna Naber). She is also survived by her brother, Dale Mohr. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Carl “Butch” Mohr, and her special uncle and aunt, John and Marie Schout.

Her family, faith, and farm were her greatest joys! Nancy’s family always knew they could count on her—for a phone call filled with encouragement, a big hug when it was needed most, or prayers lifted up on their behalf. She was a mighty prayer warrior! She loved being surrounded by her family; cooking and baking for them, playing games, going on adventures, and celebrating milestones. She valued family traditions, especially gathering her family every Saturday for tacos.

Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. A longtime member of First Allendale Christian Reformed Church, Nancy served faithfully in many roles over the years. She especially enjoyed teaching Calvinettes, and as a young mom, mentoring the Busy Bees brought her great joy. In more recent years, she was a faithful prayer partner to many GEMS girls; she poured out love and guidance to generations of young girls.

She loved being married to a farmer and continuing the farm life she had known since childhood. In her heyday she could be found bouncing around on a tractor doing fieldwork. In her later years she was upgraded to parts runner, which involved frequent trips!

Nancy’s heart for others was evident in every aspect of her life. She had a quick smile, a happy spirit, and a warm heart that radiated the boundless love of Jesus. Many were taken under her wing over the years; she cared deeply for those around her with the great capacity God gave her to love others. She was especially known for her love of children, and over the years she cared for countless little ones with open arms and a wide-open heart.

In accordance with Nancy’s wishes, a celebration of life took place with her family prior to her passing.

Her legacy is one of steadfast faith, generous love, joyful service, and deep-rooted devotion to those around her. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.

A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, August 23 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Traders Creek Farm, 5485 Warner St., Allendale. Rainy day location will be First Allendale Christian Reformed Church, 5734 Country View. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Allendale Christian School.
