Mildred M. Geglio

November 30, 2020

Mildred May Geglio, aged 95, peacefully entered the gates of Heaven on November 30, 2020, at the Rose Garden Assisted Living Center in Grandville, Michigan where she resided the last two years. While her health slowly declined and dementia advanced, it was Covid19 that ultimately contributed to her passing. Mildred was born on June 29, 1925 in Albion, Michigan and was adopted by John and Alice Veen and their son Clarence who preceded her in death. She grew up during the depression era and moved several times. Despite this she shared many stories of happy times in her childhood. At 18 she married Theodore VanSingel and moved to different locations to be with him during his training in the US Army. She was widowed before age 20 when Ted was killed in the Battle of the Bulge. After some time she found love again with a dark and handsome Italian. She married Anthony Geglio in 1947 and together they had seven children before Anthony was tragically killed in a work accident leaving her a widow again at age 46. Mildred (Millie) lived the rest of her days dedicated to raising their children and loving her 21 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. Family was always first and she made every birthday and holiday special. She prepared many delicious meals, loved to travel, play Bingo, jigsaw and crossword puzzles, but card games were her favorite pastime. She passed on her love of cards to her family even though she strictly followed the rules and would often say “there are no friends in cards”. She lived independently until age 93 when she moved to the Rose Garden. Mildred will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her children, Anthony (Judy) Geglio, Bonnie (Larry) Melville, Rosanne (Philip) DeZwaan, Victoria (Douglas) Hoekstra, Melinda (Terry) Haehnel, William (Kimberly) Geglio and Charles (Gina) Geglio. Also survived by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and sister-in-law Lena Dattilo. Grandson, Anthony C. Geglio, also preceded her in death. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Rose Garden and Emmanuel Hospice for their tender care. A private family funeral service will be held 11 am Friday, December 4, 2020 at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4031 Clyde Park SW, Wyoming, with Pastor Don VanSlyke officiating. Burial at Resurrection Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family Thursday from 6-8 pm at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4031 Clyde Park SW, Wyoming. Due to gathering restrictions, there will be a limit on the number of people who may enter the building at a time. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Sunset Legacy Foundation. We always enjoyed visiting Millie at Family parties and special events. I also remember going to ceramics in her basement. My mother made a beautiful Nativity set which is now in my dining area. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this time of loss. Mary and Loren Shuman

Aunt Millie was such a dear sweet woman. She always had a smile on her face and eyes that sparkled. Never did I hear her speak an unkind word about anyone. She was my God mother and what a perfect example she was of God here on this earth. Just the other day I was cooking a picnic ham and thoughts of Aunt Millie flooded my mind. How her amazing bean soup chock-full of ham and bacon..aah. What I would give to sit in her kitchen once more over a hot bowl of soup. Aunt Millie was a treasure and will be sadly missed by all who knew her. My deepest condolences to the entire Geglio family as you mourn the loss of a dear wonderful woman.

To the Geglio Family, I am very happy to have known Millie. She was so receptive in meeting Jim and I and making us a part of her family. She always had a smile on her face and spoke highly of how wonderful her family were. We met her during her later years when Gina met Chuck and married. It was a joy to see how she loved being with her family. I am so blessed to have known her. Prayers and love to Millie and her family. She was a true example of a strong and beautiful matriarch who held her family close to her heart.
