Michael Ray Shedd

January 25, 2026

Michael Ray Shedd, 79, of Grand Rapids, MI, passed away on January 25, 2026. As a young man, he answered his country’s call and served honorably in the United States Army in the 199th Light Infantry Brigade during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Clusters. His service was marked by courage, resilience, and a deep commitment to the men and women he served alongside. Though he rarely spoke of the hardships he endured, his quiet strength and steady character reflected the sacrifices he made. After returning home, Michael built a life defined by hard work, loyalty, and love for his family. He was known as someone who could always be counted on—whether offering advice, lending a helping hand, or simply showing up when it mattered most. He took pride in his work, his home, his community, and he carried the values of service and perseverance into every chapter of his life. He was a strong, steady, and faithful servant of God. He lived a life of faithful service and joyful generosity. He worked for Mary Free Bed in the prosthetics department where he learned his skill. His deep desire to help others led him on many mission trips to Ecuador and Costa Rica with the ROMP Organization, where he shared his skills, faith, and compassion. He supported family and friends with a joyful heart and strong hands, always ready to lend practical help and steady encouragement. An avid camper and traveler, Michael  loved the outdoors and the simple pleasures of time spent with loved ones around a campfire with a cup of Coffee or exploring new places. He will be cherished by all who knew him, and his legacy of faith, service, and kindness will live on in their lives. He is survived by his wife, Michele; children, Tina Elliott, Michael (Stacy) Shedd, Andrew (Sara) King, and Jennifer Bos; sister, Carole Moore; grandchildren, Johnathan Elliott, Benjamin Stinson, Chandler Shedd, Joslin Shedd, Kylee (Zach) Crable, Colin King, Hannah Bos, Hailey Bos (Justin White) Kamryn Bos; 3 great grandsons. He was preceded in death by his father John H Shedd, mother Virginia Witherall, and stepfather Mike Witherall. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10am on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at St. John Vianney Church, 4101 Clyde Park Avenue SW, Wyoming with Rev. John Vallier officiating. Burial will be held at Resurrection Cemetery.  Relatives and friends may meet the family on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8pm at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4031 Clyde Park  Ave SW, Wyoming. You were the best grandpa a granddaughter could ever ask for. You taught me everything i know. You were a very loving, happy, stubborn, caring person who always had the best words of wisdom and encouragement every time anyone needed it or even when it was hard to hear. Every day you inspired me to do better and work harder to accomplish my goals, whether it was to do better in school or even accomplish silly dreams that i had. I will never be able to express the amount of gratitude i have for you!! You have never ever judged me for my careless mistakes, but instead you sat there and listened and gave me advice even when i didn’t want to listen to it because it was hard for me to hear. I will forever miss going on camping trips with you and grandma and having our nightly ice cream after dinner. All of the memories i have with you will forever be in my heart. Thank you so much for being the man you were and caring for me like i was your daughter. I love and miss you so much grandpa!! I will forever be your bubba-louie!!!

Grandpa, you were our safe place, our constant, and our greatest blessing. Your love was something we could always feel, even in the quiet moments. You gave so much of yourself to everyone around you, and the world feels a little less bright without you in it. We will carry your love, your lessons, and your memory with us for the rest of our lives. You were deeply loved beyond words and will be missed every single day. We love you forever.
