Max Holmes

Max E. Holmes, age 97, passed away on Thursday, April 29, 2021. Max lived in Standale for over 73 years. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He proudly served in the Army Air Force, during World War II. During his retirement, Max enjoyed playing golf, winters in Florida, and working in his garden and yard. He was a lifelong member of the Grand Rapids Elks and the Highlands Country Club. Max was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen “Pete” Holmes; and his brother, Leonard Holmes. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Pat and Mary Lou Holmes, Larry and Debbie Holmes; grandchildren, Kim and Tom Holloway, Kelli Holmes, Julie and Ted Gerrard, Ken and Kristi Sremba, Joe and Amy Sremba, Sally and Tim Bosch; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Frieda Gilbert; friend of 75 years, Ed Wieck, from the “club”; and many nieces and nephews. A private family graveside service will be held at Rosedale Memorial Park. The family would like to express their appreciation to Max’s caregiver Dann, from Senior Helpers, and the nurses and staff at SKLD Leonard Nursing Home. In Max’s memory, please pour yourself a glass of Jameson, smoke a cigar, scoop some ice cream, or play a round of golf.
