SLAYTON - Maurice Stephen Slayton, age 94, went to his heavenly home on Thursday, February 22, 2018. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Marie Slayton; Parents, Frank and Gladys Slayton, brother and sister-in-law, Carroll and Marian Slayton; sister and brother-in-law, Iris and Al Bennett; brother, Ray Slayton. Maurie is survived by his children, Janice (George) Thornell, Bonnie (Peter Jonker) Slayton, Al (Jill) Slayton; grandchildren, J.G. (Phyllis) Thornell, Michelle (Wayne) Hsieh, Steve Thornell, Nicole (Justin) DeBoode, Garrett (Lindsey) Jonker, Matt Slayton, Erin Slayton; great grandchildren, Cody, Ayla, Henley, Willem, Daniel, Nelleka, Hannah; sister-in-law, Phyllis Slayton; several nieces, nephews, and many friends. Maurie was born in the Belding area on the Slayton Family Centennial Farm. He was a hard worker and accomplished much in his life. As a skilled draftsman, Maurie had a great eye for detail and precision. He always treated others with respect, was very giving, and known for his caring ways. A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday at Second Congregational UCC, 525 Cheshire Drive NE, Grand Rapids. Interment at River Ridge Cemetery. His family will greet relatives and friends 6:00 to 8:00 PM Tuesday at Stegenga Funeral Chapel, 1601 Post Drive NE, Belmont and one hour prior to the service at the church.
