It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Jane Namey, a cherished mother and grandmother, devoted teacher, and avid sportsperson. Mary peacefully left this world on January 11th, 2024 surrounded by the love of her family. She was 84 years old.

Mary, born July 23, 1939, was an extraordinary individual who touched the lives of many with her kindness, warmth, and zest for life. A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Mary dedicated her life to the pursuit of knowledge and imparting it to others. She earned her degree in education from Michigan State University and later achieved her masters, becoming a beloved and dedicated teacher in the Grand Rapids Public School System.

Mary’s passion for education was matched only by her love for physical activity. An accomplished long-distance runner, she competed in numerous marathons including the Detroit International Marathon and the Carlsbad Marathon. Tennis and golf were also among her favorite pastimes, showcasing her athleticism and competitive spirit.

In her retirement years, Mary and her late husband Ed embarked on many exciting journeys exploring the world together. Their adventures were meticulously documented in photobooks, capturing the beauty of their travels and the joy they shared. These memories will forever be treasured by her family.

Mary is survived by her loving children, Edward and Laura Namey, Kevin and Mary Namey; sister, Barbara Bowen; grandchildren, Kevin, Kathleen, Alec, Kate; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Dorothy Reverski; sister, Nancy Cooper; and her beloved husband, Ed.

A celebration of Mary’s vibrant life will be held at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4646 Kalamazoo Ave SE, Kentwood, on Saturday, March 16 at 11:00 am with a visitation beginning at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Women’s Sports Foundation or the American Cancer Society, reflecting Mary’s lifelong commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of others.

May Mary Namey rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the love and warmth she brought to all who were fortunate enough to know her. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

Mrs. Namey was my well-liked English teacher at West Middle 45 years ago. I think of her sometimes, and I’m glad to see she lived a full and happy life. My thoughts are with her family and friends.
