Marie Noe

September 24, 1933 ~
June 19, 2025

It is with joy and thanksgiving that we announce our mom and grandmother, Marie Noe, walked through the gates of heaven on June 19, 2025. We are forever grateful for her unconditional love for her family. She was a constant presence in our lives and we always knew that she was cheering us on from the sidelines. Marie leaves behind a legacy of a hard work ethic. While raising four children, she worked full- time at Grand Valley State University starting out in the Admissions Office and ending her career of almost 30 years, in the Administration Office. While working full time, she worked alongside our dad, Carl, renovating a 100-year-old farmhouse room by room. She also helped with planting and harvesting a garden that was always over an acre in size, canning and freezing all of the fruits and vegetables to feed our family.

After retirement, our parents spent many winters in Florida until they moved to Covenant Village in Grand Rapids where she lived out her life. We will always be grateful to the great care she received in her last days from the staff at Covenant Village with help from Corewell Hospice.

Marie has been reunited with our dad, Carl Noe, who predeceased her in 2015.   She leaves behind her children, Lori Alvesteffer and her children, Taryn and Brett Gish, Kelsey and Matt Uzarski, and Jessica and Zach Waters; David and Ann Noe, and their children, Nick Noe, Chris Noe, and Dan and Sarah Noe; Lisa and Doug Van Dyke and their daughter, Tessa and Eric Emelander; Lynne and John DeBruin, and their children, Johnnie and Keri De Bruin, and Elizabeth and Jose Galvan. She also leaves behind 17 great-grandchildren and one sister, Donna Spiccuza. Marie was also predeceased by her second husband, Richard Hoolsema, and his two children. A private family graveside service will be held later this week.

Marie was a cherished and longtime member of the Grand Valley State University community. She exemplified kindness, perseverance, and wisdom. Throughout her three decades of service, she mentored and inspired hundreds of students. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Marie Noe Student Employee Success Endowed Scholarship to continue Marie’s legacy of supporting GVSU students. Or you can make a donation in her name to Corewell Hospice.

I am so sorry for the loss of your Mom and Grandma. I have very fond memories of our Bauer neighborhood and enjoyed playing with the Noe kids and working with Dan. May precious memories comfort you during this time of loss.

Marie became my executive assistant when I joined GVSU, and we worked together for 14 years. She was exceptionally talented and universally respected, but above all Marie was dedicated to the students. She guided and mentored students who worked in the President's Office, graciously sharing her knowledge, insight and friendship. It's no surprise that a Student Employee Success Scholarship is named for her. Marie possessed an abundance of compassion, exemplified by her volunteer work as a family liaison to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Dept. She was often on hand when deputies delivered difficult news of injury or death to next of kin. Each of us lucky enough to have been in Marie's orbit are better for knowing her. She holds a special place in our hearts. Matt McLogan, GVSU Vice President Emeritus

We first met your parents at Cottonwood during coffee in the church. They asked us where we lived and both your parents started laughing, almost 52 years later we still live at 7460 Melody Lane, their first home as it was ours when we bought it, we're the third owners. Some years ago we were having lunch at Raybrook with my aunt and your Mom was at the same table. We kept looking at each other, I asked my aunt if this was a second marriage and then told your Mom who we were. You as children/grandchildren have our sympathy. If you ever want to see your first home, you are more than welcome to do so.

What fond memories of Marie and Carl. I had so many great interactions with each of them starting in the early 70’s. My deepest sympathy to the kids and grandkids in the passing of your dear mom and grandma.
