May 13, 2025

Marie Ann Doornbos, a cherished and beloved child of God, went home to heaven to live forever with her Lord and Savior on May 13, 2025. Marie, aged 92, of Zeeland, Michigan, was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Rev. Marvin Doornbos, of 27 years, and her daughter, Kathy Lynne Bonthuis. She is survived by her children, Mary Doornbos, Robert Doornbos and Mary Molewyk Doornbos, and Tom Bonthuis; grandchildren, Eric Doornbos, Rachael Steenwyk, Emily and Jim Hapner, Brendan and Courtney Bonthuis, and Sarah Bonthuis and Garrett O’Brien; great-grandchildren, Bryan and Henry Steenwyk, Moses, Cora, Josie, and Jude Hapner, and Charlie, Elliott, and Graham Bonthuis; siblings, Tob Visser, George Visser, Grace Klamer, Connie Egberts, and Fran Visser; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Jan Visser, Rev. Milton and Jeanne Doornbos; and multiple nieces and nephews. Marie was preceded in death by her siblings, Minard Visser, Joe Visser, Richard Visser, and Evie Yonkman; as well as her sister-in-law and brothers-in-law, Leona Matthysse, Gerald Doornbos, and Kenneth Doornbos. During her marriage to Marvin, Marie served alongside him at Calvary CRC (Pella, Iowa), Bethany CRC (South Holland, Illinois), Westend “Highland Hills” CRC (Grand Rapids, Michigan), and First Zeeland CRC (Zeeland, Michigan). In her later years, Marie was an active member of Baldwin Street CRC (Jenison, Michigan), 12th Ave. CRC (Jenison, Michigan), and Ridgewood CRC (Jenison, Michigan). Marie lived her life humbly and generously and assumed the role of “bonus mother” to the friends of her children. She used her God-given talents to serve others as a legal assistant and in the context of her role as a Bible Study Fellowship leader, a volunteer at Crossroads Ministries, and a volunteer at Love Your Neighbor. Another of Marie’s many gifts was that of hospitality which was often associated with delicious baked goods. She supplied those baked goods to the students of Calvin Christian High School, friends, ill or shut-in church members, teams and groups that her grandchildren were involved in, and even to the United States Department of State. Marie took particular delight in holding garage sales and was known as a very persuasive salesperson. A celebration of Marie’s life will be held on Saturday, May 24, at 11 a.m. at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home 4145 Chicago Dr. SW, Grandville, with Rev. Keith Doornbos officiating. A private burial will take place at Georgetown Township Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Saturday from 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bible Study Fellowship or Bibles for India
